MSU golf coach to hold clinic

THOMPSONVILLE — Michigan State women’s golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll will be leading a clinic at Crystal Mountain on Saturday, June 22, as part of a Junior Golf Fun Day.

Slobodnik-Stoll has been the Spartan coach 16 years, taking the team to the NCAA Championships nine times. Michigan State’s won four Big Ten titles under Slobodnik-Stoll.

The free clinic is geared for kids 5-12 years of age and will kick-off an afternoon of games at Crystal’s Practice and Learning Center. Kids are welcome to bring their own golf equipment or golf clubs can be provided.

After the clinic, the fun will continue with hitting balls into a kiddie pool, target nets and playing three holes on the practice range’s short course. The Junior Golf Fun Day runs from 3-5 p.m.

Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll will be at Crystal, along with several of her players, to participate in the Michigan PGA Women’s Open later this month.


Dell’Acqua elected pres. of TB Blues

TRAVERSE CITY — Tony Dell’Acqua was elected president of the Traverse Bay Blues at the annual general meeting this week.

Matt Szatkiewicz was named the coach, Dave Wenkle the captain, Josh Benghauser the treasurer, Corey Mather the match coordinator, Donald Welz the recruiting coordinator, and Jimmy Turnball the social coordinator.

The Blues 14-week rugby schedule begins in August. The Blues advanced in the recent Midwest Shield tournament to place in the highly-competitive National Division 3, East-North Conference.


131s win two at USSSA tournament

GRAND RAPIDS — The 14-under 131s Travel Baseball team went 2-2 at the USSSA Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids last weekend.

Wins over the Kalamazoo Maroons and Muskegon Riptide helped the 131s advance to the semi-final game at Davenport University, where they fell to the Diamonds Rayders 6-5 in extra innings. The 14-under teams will be hosting the Cherry Capital Classic this weekend.
