---- — CAPE HAZE, Fla. — Gerard M. "Jerry" Haley, 73, died on Jan. 25, 2013, in Venice, Fla., after a brief illness. Jerry was born on March 14, 1939, in Detroit, the oldest of seven children.
Jerry attended University of Detroit High School as well as the University of Detroit.
He worked for the Chevrolet Division of General Motors and eventually became a regional manager in Hays, Kan.
He married Jean Whitehurst in 1958; together they had four children, Jerry (Paula), Lisa (Jeff) Fetter, Scott and Sean (Aubrey), and five grandchildren.
Jerry and Shirley Greer were married in 1976 and made Torch Lake their home until they moved to Cape Haze, Fla., in 2004.
Jerry was a car dealer, owning Subaru By The Bay and then later Bay Buick/Cadillac/Pontiac in Petoskey.
He was a founding member of what is now Torch Lake Protection Alliance (TLPA) and the Northern Michigan GM Retirees Club and was also active in the Petoskey Rotary Club, Junior Achievement and the Alden Volunteers.
Jerry loved Torch Lake, regularly cruising at sunset in his old Century with his wife and an unknown beverage in a large tumbler. Back in the day, he was known for water skiing around the entire lake on one ski (although there are no surviving eyewitnesses).
In addition to his children and grandchildren, Jerry is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Cape Haze, Fla.; and siblings, Sharon Fitzpatrick, Louise Haley, Mary Meier and Michael J.(Mary) Haley, all of Antrim County, and Patrick J.(Ann) Haley, of Lake Orion.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen; his parents, Gerard and Ada Haley; and his brother-in-law, Paul J. Fitzpatrick.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Torch Lake in June.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to TLPA, PO Box 706, Bellaire, MI 49615.
