TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department will hold a Fire Prevention Week open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 5, at Station 11, 3000 Albany, off Veterans Drive. There will be a free community picnic, a bounce house, fire station tours and more.
TRAVERSE CITY — The Jolly Pumpkin will host its fifth Pumpkinfest on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Activities will be held from noon-5 p.m., with a Harvest Buffet from noon-3 p.m. in the Peninsula Room, and pumpkin trebuchet launching at 3 p.m. The cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children, which includes a Pumpkinfest pint glass and the first beverage, with $2 refills all day. There also will be live music by Billy Strings and Don Julin, crafts and sack races.

Benefit blood drive
TRAVERSE CITY — Michigan Blood will hold a benefit blood drive for the Women’s Cancer Fund.
Michigan Blood will donate $10 to the Cancer Fund for each person who attempts to donate blood at the Traverse City fixed site, 2575 Aero Park Dr., from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, and 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8. Blue Care Network of Michigan also will provide T-shirts to anyone who attempts to donate blood.

Forum on gun violence
TRAVERSE CITY — The public is invited to an educational forum on the issue of gun violence.
The forum will start with a display and discussion of firearm types at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, followed by the panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse, 6726 Center Road. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Donations will be accepted to cover expenses.
The forum is sponsored by the UU Congregation, Episcopal Peace Fellowship, Traverse Area Interfaith Peace Fellowship and Veterans for Peace.
Christian Science lecture scheduled
TRAVERSE CITY — Suzanne Riedel, international lecturer, practitioner and teacher of Christian Science healing, with give a talk titled “Realizing Your Closeness to God” on Thursday, Oct. 10.
The free lecture starts at 7 p.m. at the West Bay Beach Resort-A Holiday Inn Resort, 615 E. Front St. Riedel will discuss finding peace, direction and healing through practical and effective prayer. Everyone is welcome.

Autumn prayer of thanks
MANCELONA — Mancelona United Methodist Church will sponsor a prayer to thank God for autumn’s beauty, bounty and blessings on Sunday, Oct. 13.
The prayer service starts at 1:30 p.m. at Deadman’s Hill Scenic Overlook on Deadman’s Hill Road, off U.S. 131 between Mancelona and Boyne Falls. Hospice volunteer training available
LUDINGTON — Hospice of Michigan will conduct free volunteer training for individuals who wish to volunteer in Lake, Benzie, Manistee, Mason or Oceana counties.
Training will be held from 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 15, 22 and 29, at the Ludington Hospice office, 5177 W. U.S. 10. No minimum number of volunteer hours are required and hours are scheduled at the convenience of volunteers and/or families. Volunteers may choose in which areas they wish to volunteer and are not required to work with patients.

safeTALK workshop set
TRAVERSE CITY — Third Level Crisis Center will offer a three-hour workshop for community members with all levels of helping experience who are interested in learning practical skills to competently and confidently connect a person at risk of suicide to help.
safeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone) will meet from 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Grand Traverse County Health Department, 2600 LaFranier Road. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The $40 cost includes materials and refreshments. A limited number of full scholarships are available for individuals who live in or serve residents of Benzie County.
