Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — KALKASKA — There were co-champs for the Lake Michigan Conference girls basketball title.
After splitting their regular season series and sweeping all other conference foes, Kalkaska and St. Francis split the title after each finished with 13-1 records. The Blazers beat Boyne City 67-21 on senior night Friday while St. Francis had a 57-19 win at Charlevoix.
"We had to win 13 games in a row, which was a challenge," Blazers coach Dave Dalton said.
Kalkaska had a big night from its seniors. Kelli Guy had 33 points, four rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Tabitha Kibby had 26 points while Elle Barber had seven rebounds and six assists.
In Charlevoix, Bridget Bussell led St. Francis (18-2) with 13 points and eight rebounds while Kaitlin Feeney and Liza Erickson each had 11 points.
Kourtney Putman had eight points for the Rayders.
St. Francis hosts East Jordan in the Class C district opener on Monday. In Class B, Kalkaska has a bye in the non-traditional district and will host either Houghton Lake or Roscommon on Wednesday.
Big North Conference champ Petoskey wrapped up the regular season with a 59-25 league win over Alpena.
The Northmen (17-2, 11-1 BNC) had 24 points from Kelsey Ance while Megan Tompkins had 11 points and Alyssa VanWerden chipped in eight points.
Petoskey plays Marquette on Monday in the district opener.
Glen Lake 60
Glen Lake posted a 60-47 Northwest Conference win over host Buckley.
The Lakers (16-4) had 17 points from Scotlyn Brengman while Jordan Peplinski had 14 points and Jessica Lee added 10 points.
Jordan Barley had 13 for the Bears while Bailee Kuhn scored 11 points.
Forest Area 29
Forest Area got off to a hot start in a 29-19 Ski Valley Conference win over Pellston.
The Warriors (4-14, 4-11 SVC) led 13-4 in the first quarter.
Lindsey Czuk had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Emily Gonyer had seven points, six rebounds and four steals while Kourtni Birgy had six points and 13 rebounds.
GT Academy 40
GT Academy earned a 40-27 win over Northport.
The Mustangs (3-13) had 22 points from Tiffany Wright while Dakota Morgan had seven points and 12 rebounds.
GR Grizzlies 34
The TCBAA opened tournament play with a 62-34 win over the Grand Rapids Grizzlies.
The Bulldogs (18-2) stay in Mt. Pleasant to play again today.
Molly Plamondon had 20 points in the win, Sarah Plamondon had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Casey Plamondon had 10 points and seven boards.
St. Francis 78
St. Francis clinched the Lake Michigan Conference title outright with a 78-57 win at Charlevoix.
The Gladiators (18-0, 13-0 LMC) had 22 points and 10 rebounds from Kody Kleinrichert while Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi had 18 points and six assists. Byron Bullough also had 16 points.
For the Rayders, Charlie Hamilton had 18 points and Zach Hankins scored 10 points.
Bellaire won the Ski Valley Conference title outright with a 65-38 victory over Onaway.
The Eagles (17-0, 14-0 SVC) had 20 points from Tyler Thornton while Mitch Teetzel had 15 points. James Schrader and Drew Bailey chipped in eight points each.
Onaway had 14 points from Carlos Bautista.
Bellaire plays Inland Lakes twice next week to wrap up the regular season.
Mancelona had three scorers in double digits for an 84-56 Ski Valley Conference win over Johannesburg-Lewiston.
The Ironmen (14-5, 12-3 SVC) were led by Brandon Dingman's 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Brandon Scott had 17 points and five rebounds, Griffin Borst had 15 points and six rebounds while Logan Borst had eight steals.
The Cardinals had 15 points from Logan Huff and 11 points from Jacob Newell.
Glen Lake 53
Glen Lake avenged a previous loss to Frankfort with a 53-51 Northwest Conference victory.
The Lakers clinched a share of the league title with the win.
Mike O'Brien had 20 points for Glen Lake (15-2, 11-1 NWC) while Curtis Bunek had 13 points and Carter Lee added 10 points.
Owen Stratton had 18 points for the Panthers while Brandon Schaub added 16 points.
Suttons Bay 47
Suttons Bay picked up its third straight win with a 47-38 Northwest Conference victory over Leland.
The Norsemen (6-11) had had 13 points from Logan Mikesell while Aaron Orban had 10 points and 23 rebounds.
Tyler Leveque had 12 points for the Comets (8-9, 5-7 NWC) while A.J. Whittaker had seven points in his first significant action after a stress fracture in his foot.
Kingsley held off a big fourth-quarter comeback from Buckley for a 70-61 Northwest Conference.
The Stags led 52-34 before the Bears dropped 27 points in the fourth to get back into the game.
Tristan Eickenroth had 17 points for Kingsley while Scott McPherson had 11 points. Buckley had 31 points from Austin Burmania while Dustin Tandy had 13 points.
Manistee Catholic 54
Manistee Catholic clinched at least a share of the Western Michigan D League title with a 54-46 victory over Baldwin.
The Sabers (14-3, 13-1 WMDL) are two games up on Baldwin with two league games to play. It's the second straight WMDL title for Manistee CC.
Zack Bialik had 23 points and six rebounds in the win. Ben Feliczak had 22 points, 10 rebounds and four steals while Alex Bialik had four assists.
Baldwin had 16 points from Andon Ware while Brandon Childress scored 13 points.
Cadillac stayed in the Big North Conference race with a 47-40 win over Gaylord.
The Vikings (13-3, 8-3 BNC) can earn a share of the league title with TC West with a win next week.
Nick Paquet had 14 points for Cadillac while Wyatt Lucas and Justin Liptak each had eight. Jalen Brooks had 10 rebounds.
Brian Rabine had 11 points for Gaylord.
Burt Lake NMCA 56
Burt Lake NMCA posted a 56-38 win over Wolverine.
The Eagles (8-9) had 23 points from Jake Lovitt while Robert Taylor had 18 points. Aaron Chatfield had his eighth triple-double of the season with 15 points, 14 assists and 14 rebounds.
Forest Area 62
Central Lake 49
Justin Burke had 21 points as Forest Area beat Central Lake 62-49.
The Warriors (13-5) also had seven rebounds from Austin Vance while Chad Roberts had nine points and four assists.
William Brockman had 15 points for the Trojans while Matt Sexton had 13 points.
Bear Lake 72
Bear Lake had a big night from Cody Brown in a 72-63 win over Brethren.
Brown had 28 points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Lakers (9-7, 8-6 WMDL) while Bryson Waller had 12 points and four boards. Riley Merrill had 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Harbor Light 55
Bill Stowe hit 1,000 career points in Northport's 59-55 win over Harbor Light.
Stowe finished with 25 points for the Wildcats while Armando Hernandez scored 12 points.
TC Christian qualifies for state finals
TC Christian's boys placed third at the Division 4 regional at Lucky Jack's to qualify for the state finals.
The Sabres were third with 3,535 points. Rogers City won with 3,788 while Oscoda had 3,551. Girls qualifiers were Rogers City, Oscoda and St. Ignace.
TC Christian had a 217 each from Jared Argyle and Sam Anthony while Jon Tuck had a 182.
