NORMAL, Ill. — The Traverse City Beach Bums saw their team-record eight game winning streak snapped on Friday as the Normal Cornbelters handed Traverse City a 9-4 setback in the first game of a three-game series.
The Beach Bums (19-12) entered the contest red hot, but fell behind 9-0 through six innings and could never recover.
Mike Schwartz went 2-for-3 and hit a home run to lead Normal (18-13). His homer in the third inning put the Cornbelters ahead 2-0, and he added a singled and scored as part of a big five-run inning for the hosts.
The Beach Bums scored only one run off Normal hurler Tyler Lavigne, who only allowed two hits in seven innings. Traverse City had much better luck against Normal reliever Mitch Mormann, who allowed three runs on five hits over two innings.
Sean Gusrang led the Beach Bums going 3-for-4, including a double. Chase Burch had a two-run single in the eighth, while Carlo Testa and Zach Kometani also had RBI hits. Ryan Still added the only other hit for Traverse City.
Jake Sabol (5-2) took the loss for Traverse City, allowing seven runs in 4.2 innings. Kyle Teague saw his first action of the year in relief and struck out seven in 3.1 innings.
Johnny Omahen (1-3) takes the mound tonight for the Beach Bums against Normal’s Ross Davis (2-2). Game time is 8 p.m.
