FIFE LAKE — A ceremony to honor 38 area U.S. servicemen who lost their lives in wars from the Civil War to Afghanistan will be held Sunday, June 16, at 1 p.m. at Fife Lake American Legion Post 219, 10283 M-186. A lunch will follow.

Chapbook release

INTERLOCHEN — Ellen Stone of Ann Arbor has won the 2013 Michigan Writers Cooperative Press chapbook contest.

Her poetry collection, “The Solid Living World,” will be published and available in June. Stone’s chapbook will be launched at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 16, at the Interlochen Arts Academy Writer’s House. The event is free and open to the public.

School retirees

LELAND — All retired Michigan school personnel and current members of the Leelanau area MARSP are invited to a meeting on Wednesday, June 20. The registration deadline is today, June 15.

Notable author

LELAND — Jack Dempsey, author of the 2013 Michigan Notable Book “Ink Trails: Michigan’s Famous and Forgotten Authors,” will visit the Leland Library, 203 Cedar St., at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 17, to discuss his book.

Tai chi

TRAVERSE CITY — The White Crane Tai Chi Association will meet for sun-style tai chi practice on Thursdays, June 20-Aug. 22.

The group will meet at 11:30 a.m., weather permitting, at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center’s Titus Street entrance. The public is welcome. Call 944-9540 to learn more.

Farmers market

TRAVERSE CITY — The Village at Bay Ridge will hold an indoor farmers market on Thursday, June 20.

Market hours are 10 a.m. to noon in the West Building dining room, 3950 Scenic Ridge. There will be produce, baked goods and brown free-range eggs.

International music

CLAM RIVER — Singers of United Lands (S.O.U.L.) will perform Thursday, June 20, at Nottingham North, one mile north of Clam River.

The touring quartet of professional singers from four different continents will perform at 8 p.m. in a house-style concert outdoors, weather permitting. The group has been touring since early January and this is their final public concert.

Boater safety

TRAVERSE CITY — Registration closes Thursday, June 20, for a Coast Guard Auxiliary boater safety class.

The class will meet in two sessions: 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, and 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at the Traverse City Coast Guard Station. The fee is $10 to cover the cost of the book and certificate. For details or registration, call Dianne Walker, 941-8076.

Surgical orientation

PETOSKEY — North Central Michigan College is offering two orientation sessions for potential surgical technologist students at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.

North Central’s Surgical Technologist program courses are offered over four semesters (excluding summer), beginning in the fall term of odd-numbered years and ending at the close of the winter term one year later. The Surgical Technologist program offers students the chance to complete a certificate or an associate of applied science degree.

Orientation sessions will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, and 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 22. The sessions are on Friday, June 21 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to noon. Interested students should plan to attend either of these sessions for more information about the program or about the application process and should meet at the desk in the lobby of the main entrance to the hospital.

Kingsley VBS

KINGSLEY — The Kingsley United Methodist Church will hold summer Vacation Bible School Monday through Friday, June 24-28.

Children entering kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to VBS from 9 a.m. to noon at the church, 113 Blair St. The theme is “Kingdom Rocks ... Where Kids Stand for God.”

Soar at VBS

ALDEN — Children ages 4 to 12 are invited to soar the skies and learn to trust God at “SKY” Vacation Bible School at Alden Community United Methodist Church.
