Athletes get work at GTA Indoor Meet

TRAVERSE CITY — Not everyone spent spring break relaxing on a beach.

For some, the break was spent continuing to prepare for the upcoming track and field season. The payoff for all that work came on Friday as Traverse City Central hosted the four-school Grand Traverse Area Indoor Meet.

“We tried to run it as a meet where kids could be in any event they wanted to be in,” said Central boys head coach John Lober. “We wanted to make it as a reward for all the kids who were here over spring break. They got a chance to be in a meet and have some competition. It worked out just fine. They’ve been working out all week. That’s what they had to do to be in the meet. “

On the boys half of the meet Central had a trio of athletes take firsts in multiple events. Aaron Taylor placed first in the high jump (6-0) and 60 intermediate hurdles (8.67), Josh Belcher won the 800 (2:32.4) and 60 high hurdles (9.55), and Devante Walker won the 60-meter dash (7.36) and was part of the winning 1,600 relay team that ran a time of 4:17. Terrell Solberg, James Brumfield and Jordan Fisher ran the other three legs of that relay.

The Trojans had the top two finishers in the shot put as John Piatek threw 53-10.5 and Austin Plamondon threw 50-1, which was a personal record. Central’s Taran Lutes won the 400 (64.27), and Benzie Central had first-places from Noah Robotham in the 1,600 (5:37), Jake Williams in the 3,200 (11:18) and Christian Kilas in the pole vault (11-0).

Benzie Central’s girls had a big day in winning five events. Zoey Reightley won the high jump (4-6) and the pole vault (6-0) and Bryce Cutler was first in the 800 (2:45) and 1,600 (6:16). Manin Lutzke won the shot put (31-8) and Ali Kay Hamilton was first in the 60 meters (8.16).

Central will open the season on Thursday when it hosts the Trojan Quad, which also features St. Francis, West and Kingsley.
