Prep Football Roundup: St. Ignace beats Joburg

ST. IGNACE — Tyler Snyder threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Joe Fullerton with 14 seconds remaining Friday to give St. Ignace a dramatic 20-14 Division 8 district football championship win over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

The Saints were trailing 14-12 when Snyder found Fullerton for the winning score.

The Cardinals, who finished 8-3, had a chance to go up nine points earlier in the fourth quarter, but had a drive stymied at the Saints 1.

“Our kids played great,” Johannesburg coach Joe Smokevitch said. “I think we shocked St. Ignace.

“Our motto has been ‘Why not us.’ That’s how our kids played.”

Down 6-0, Cardinal defensive end Brad Kussrow returned an interception 80 yards to put Johannesburg in front, 7-6.

Then, trailing 12-6, Brandon Huff scored on a one-yard dive as time expired in the second quarter.

Neither team could score again until the closing seconds.

Dillon Cushman led the Cardinals with 127 yards on 19 carries.

Andrew Gross paced the defense with 15 tackles, including two sacks. Huff had 11 stops and sophomore Dale Wells eight. Wells was one of seven sophomores Smokevitch played.

The Cardinals committed three turnovers.

Boyne City 19

Negaunee scored 22 unanswered points in the third quarter to pull away to a 42-19 Division 6 district football championship win over Boyne City in a game played at the Superior Dome.

The Miners led 12-6 at half, thanks to a Ryan Syrjala touchdown on a quarterback sneak with no time left in the half.

The third quarter featured an 81-yard scoring strike from Syrjala to Tyler Jandron.

Negaunee’s ace back, Tyler LaJoie, broke two long touchdowns on runs covering 30 and 71 yards.

Boyne City, which finished 8-3, was led by Malik Smith’s 142 yards on the ground in 19 carries. Maceo Vroman had touchdown runs of 55 and 16 yards for the Ramblers.
