Hazardous waste

KINGSLEY — The Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery Department (RecycleSmart) will hold a household hazardous waste and pesticide collection Sept. 28.

The collection event will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. by appointment at the Grand Traverse County Road Commission building, 1471 E. M-113. It is free to Grand Traverse County residents (up to 150 pounds). Accepted materials include oil-based and latex paints, cleaning products, pesticides, mercury, moth balls, pool chemicals and more. BACN benefit

FRANKFORT — Once again, Bea Stone’s birthday party will be a fundraiser for Benzie Area Christian Neighbors, one of her favorite charities.

The community is invited to help Stone celebrate her 88th birthday from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 30, at Michigan Shores. The party is being hosted by the Tuesday Trekkers. There will be wine, cheese, music and the Hot Dog Men will be back by popular demand to serve hot dogs.

Donations will benefit BACN’s food pantry. The goal is to raise $7,500, which will cover the cost of one month of pantry food purchases. Those unable to attend may send greetings to Stone at Apt. 104, 641 Michigan Ave., Frankfort, MI 49635.

Jigsaw Puzzle Sale

BENZONIA — The Friends of the Benzonia Public Library will hold a used jigsaw puzzle sale on Sept. 28.

The sale will be open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the library on U.S. 31. Proceeds support the library. For details, call 882-4111.

Harvest Festival

BELLAIRE — The Bellaire Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the 15th annual Harvest Festival and Scarecrow Extravaganza on Sept. 28.

Activities take place from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. in downtown Bellaire and start with a Boy Scout pancake breakfast at the Bellaire Senior Center. New this year is a Festival Beer Tent featuring Short’s Brewing Company and live music by Levi Britton. There also will be a cross country 5K run, a heaviest pumpkin contest, arts and crafts, a flea market and farmers market. a best-dressed pet parade, and a car show.
