Cooking up support for cancer survival

TRAVERSE CITY — There’s the “c” word, so awful that people often whisper it — cancer. The “v” word also makes some cringe — vegan.

Sherry Davis teaches vegan cooking to prevent and survive cancer, but she uses terms like “plant-based” or “plant strong” instead.

“People hear vegan and their eyes roll around and (they) fall off their chairs,” Davis said.

Davis, a Food for Life instructor, hosts cooking classes in her Traverse City condo that combine philosophy, food preparation and support for cancer prevention and survival, diabetes and weight loss. Topics tackle incorporating more high fiber foods, dairy alternatives and reducing high fats and sugar. Her programs work in concert with medical treatment, Davis said, and don’t replace it.

Ann Porter, a Traverse City real estate broker, took the cancer class with a friend of hers, then “dragged” her husband to another class, she said.

“It changed my life,” Porter said.
