Boyne Falls finally tastes victory against Bellaire

ELLSWORTH — Over the past three seasons, Bellaire has been the only team around that’s had Boyne Falls’ number.

On Friday night it was finally the Loggers’ turn to taste victory.

Behind a blisteringly hot shooting performance in the third quarter from behind the 3-point arc — the Loggers connected on their first seven tries —Boyne Falls captured its first boys basketball district title since 2006 with a 55-46 victory over the Eagles in a Class D district championship game at Ellsworth High School.

Andrew Stevens led the Loggers (20-1) with 15 points, including four straight makes on 3-pointers during the third period as Boyne Falls turned a 21-15 halftime deficit into a 38-31 lead.

Andrew Campbell also knocked down two threes and Clay Whitley had another as the Loggers were unconscious from outside. In fact, the only three-pointer, or shot for that matter, that they missed during the eight minute stretch was a desperation 25-footer by Stevens as the clock was running out on the quarter. In all, the Loggers were 8-for-9 from the field in the period.

It was an incredible shooting display, but not the first time they’ve shot the ball like that from outside.

“I have once against Alanson, but this is the biggest game I’ve ever shot it in,” said Stevens, a junior, who hadn’t scored until his third-quarter barrage. “I think I was 5-for-8 (in that game against Alanson). It felt great as I was shooting them.”

Boyne Falls coach Tim Smith, looking like a visionary, predicted his team would get a big lift from Stevens.

“I told the guys today, ‘Stevens has scored one basket the whole week.’ I thought he was going to have a big game playing the third game in this gym,” said Smith.

Marcus Matelski, Boyne Falls’ sophomore sensation, added 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, but mostly played a supporting role during the key point of the night.
