TRAVERSE CITY — The Northwest Orchard and Vineyard Show is a terrific opportunity for fruit growers and others interested in agriculture to learn about the latest trends in the fields.
The 2014 Northwest Orchard and Vineyard Show will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday (Jan. 14 and 15) at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme. Registration opens at 8 a.m. The cost for both days is $30, payable at the door. The line is often long at the registration desk, so meeting attendees are encouraged to arrive well before the 9 a.m. start time. The concurrent wine-grape session will be held Tuesday , and tree fruit topics will be offered on both days. A new saskatoon session has been added to the morning of the second day.
At this year’s show we will feature some terrific topics from Michigan State University. Dr. George Sunsin will be on hand to discuss both American and European brown rots, two key diseases in tart and sweet cherry. We will cover the results of a research project that investigated controlling the borer complex with mating disruption and preliminary results from our high-density tart cherry plots at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center. Other topics will include a report on bird damage studies in tree fruit and wine-grapes, a MAEAP update, the new tart cherry crop insurance program, ReTain use in sweet cherry, and updated input spreadsheet on the costs of managing tart cherries.
The fruit industry luncheon keynote speaker this year will be Dave Barrons, former weatherman for 9 & 10 News.
The wine-grape session of the show will be held Tuesday for a day-long session. Sessions include pruning strategies for modern vineyards by Dr. Tom Zabadal, Department of Horticulture, Michigan State. Other topics include bird damage results, ozone use in vineyards, an insect update, and a success story of the wine appreciation class at MSU.
On Wednesday morning the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Foundation will hold its annual board meeting starting at 8 a.m. This session will be followed by a morning with the Cherry Marketing Institute (CMI) beginning at 9 a.m.
In the afternoon, we will cover some apple topics, such as NAA use in managing high-density apples.
