TRAVERSE CITY — Nicholas Murphy’s goal at the 4:59 mark of overtime was the difference as the Soo Firehawks beat the Traverse City Hounds 5-4 on Friday at Centre ICE Arena.
The game-winner, which was assisted by Kevin Killips and Ryan Marshall, ended a game that started decidedly in Traverse City’s favor and featured a back-and-forth third period.
The Hounds (18-3-1-2) came out and scored the first two goals of the night — the first by Garrett Cebalt and the second by Scott Luca — but the Firehawks tied the game with a first-period score by Andrew Holder and a second-period goal from Cody Anderson.
Soo took its first lead in the last minute of the second on a score from Luke Wizauer, but Traverse City managed to tie the game twice more in the third period. Jacob Gillis made it 3-3 at the 1:11 mark of the third and Kevin Miloser ultimately forced overtime with his goal at the 9:58 mark, coming 57 seconds after Nick Papandrea gave Soo a 4-3 lead.
Premysl Synek, Adam Jonak, Gillis and Zach Early had assists for the Hounds.
David Krejcik took the loss, but made 36 saves for Traverse City. Brandon Hansen was the winning goalie with 37 saves for the Firehawks (14-9-0-0).
The two teams meet again tonight at 7 p.m. at Centre ICE.
