Education Newsmakers: 12/14/2013

n Bear Lake Middle School won a spot on an upcoming “Jump with Jill” tour. The statewide tour of Michigan elementary schools will include 55 schools. Jump with Jill is a live rock and roll nutrition show and uses singable messages to make healthy habits memorable.

n The Traverse City Central Debate Team took first place in the novice division of the 23rd annual Spartan Classic Debate Tournament. Sam Franz and Meredith Allen comprised the winning two-person team. Franz also took first place in the novice speaker category. Allen placed sixth in that speaker category. Traverse City Central, represented by Clara Trippe and Alaina Chela, also made it to the final round of the varsity division. Abbie Crick, of Traverse City Central, took first place in the varsity speaker category, followed by Trippe in fourth place, Chela in fifth place, and Kristina Curtiss in eighth place.

More than 100 students from schools across the Midwest gathered for the competition.

n Parker University College of Chiropractic in Dallas, Texas, presented Evan Brian Pulver, native of Mason, the Doctor of Chiropractic degree during its 85th graduating class this month. Pulver is the son Dr. Brian Pulver, of Williamsburg, and Ms. Wendy Burns.

n Kellie Kohler, a senior and honors student at Grand Traverse Academy (GTA), has been invited to tour with the 2014 Blue Lake Northern Winds. The group plans to visit seven European communities during a three-week tour. Thousands sign up for the program and only a few are chosen. Applicants go through an interview process and are chosen with the help of character reviews from instructors.
