Memory screenings

Traverse City — Senior Helpers will offer free, confidential memory screenings and information about successful aging Tuesday, Nov. 13, as part of National Memory Screening Day.

The memory screenings will be held at Thompson Pharmacy, 324 S. Union St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free refreshments and educational materials. For details, call 933-6600.

Emergency planning

The public is invited to a free program on how to minimize the hazards of emergency situations on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Dan Scott, emergency manager of the Grand Traverse County Health Department, will discuss the hazards to safety and health during civil emergencies from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. Registration is appreciated; call 946-3000.

Family volunteer day

Traverse City — United Way of Northwest Michigan invites families to participate in Family Volunteer Day.

Volunteers will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center to fill winter necessity bags for Safe Harbor, the winter overnight shelter for the homeless community. For details, email Amanda Hilt, amanda@unitedwaynwmi.org.

Fitness open house

frankfort — The Betsie Hosick Health and Fitness Center is holding a fall open house today from 1 to 4 p.m.

There will be tours of the facility and previews of its services. In addition, discounted memberships are being offered as part of the open house, along with blood pressure screenings, body fat and weight measurements, scoliosis screenings for students in grades 5-9 and mini-massages. Memberships include more than 35 club classes weekly.

The center is located at 102 Airport Road in Frankfort.

Program on grief

Traverse City — In collaboration with Michael's Place. Hospice of Michigan will present "When Families Grieve," a free community outreach program to assist families with grieving children, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere.

Parents, grandparents, guardians and professionals are invited to view Sesame Street's "When Children Grieve," a short film featuring Katie Couric, Elmo and stories from families coping with the loss of a family member.
