Football: Lake City wins 1st district

Jo'burg beats Central Lake

LAKE CITY — The history-making postseason continues for Lake City.

The Trojans won their first playoff game a week ago with their Division 7 pre-district victory over NorthPointe Christian. Friday night, Lake City made history on the home field again, this time winning the school's first district championship with a convincing 48-7 triumph over Evart.

"I'm still in shock," said smiling senior receiver Ryan Vincent, who grabbed six passes for 175 yards and hauled in a 47-yard TD strike from quarterback Drew Marion. "I can't believe it's happened. I'm just really happy we won."

Lake City (10-1) faces either Mancelona or Ishpeming next week in the regional title game. Those teams play in Ishpeming today at 1 p.m.

The Trojans jumped to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and Evart (8-3) was never able to make up the lost ground.

"Getting the early lead was big for us tonight," Lake City coach Tim Peterson said. "The last time we played them (a 32-21 win in week seven), they jumped ahead of us and we had to come back in the second half. Tonight we came out of the gates focused and couldn't have played a much better game."

Marion threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Trojans scored on seven of their first eight possessions in the contest. Marion weaved and maneuvered his way to 58 yards rushing on 17 attempts and scored on 3- and 2-yard plunges into the end zone. He also hit on 8-of-16 passes for 259 yards, including connections of 47, 45 and 49 yards to Vincent and a 74-yard hook-up with fleeting Storm Francisco between two defenders with 7:55 remaining in the game to put an exclamation mark on the big win.

Fullback Jared Hansen, who amassed 84 yards of real estate in nine tries, tallied on a 37-yard sweep around the left side to put Lake City's first points on the board. Francisco, who had 38 yards rushing in four carries, also scored on a 9-yard flanker reverse.

"It was a great team effort," Peterson said. "The line did a great job on both sides of the line of scrimmage. I thought that was the difference. The last time they were able to get yardage consistently on first down and that killed us. Tonight, we didn't let that happen. We limited their running game and forced them to pass the ball a lot more than they wanted to."

The Trojan defense forced four turnovers, including an interception in the end zone by senior safety Jeramie Lyle to halt a long Wildcat drive in the second quarter and an interception by junior cornerback Nate Holt inside the 10-yard line to thwart another promising drive by the visitors in the third quarter.

Mike Dziendziel recovered a fumbled punt and nose guard Jimmy Hollars jumped on a fumble deep in Evart territory. Both first-quarter takeaways led to Lake City points.

Kevin Kunkel led the Trojans defensively with seven tackles. Holt and outside linebacker Brock Reid each had six.

Austin Grein, who led the Wildcats with 85 yards on 18 tries, scored from a yard out. Evart QB Jacob Fortune hit on 12-of-26 attempts for 148 yards with John Danley catching six for 91 yards.

Johannesburg     40 Central Lake     30

Mitch Hardy rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns as Johannesburg-Lewiston edged Central lake 40-30 in a Division 8 district final.

The Cardinals (9-2) travel to Beal City next weekend in regional play.

Dillon Kibby added 79 yards on the ground in the win. Quarterback Alex Payne tossed a 10-yard pass to Joe McGuire.

Dylan Helms was in on 22 tackles on defense.

Central Lake led 30-24 midway through the third quarter.
