Blues shut out Flint, clinch league title

FROM STAFF REPORTS

FLINT -- The Traverse Bay Blues RFC shut out Flint RFC 36-0 Saturday to clinch the Midwest Northern League with a 5-1 record.

The win gives Traverse home-field advantage for the first round of playoffs this Saturday at the Civic Center.

Sam Lantz scored two trys for the Blues, while Dave Wenkel, Derrick Counselor, Matt Thomas and Mike Sherwood each had one.

Griffon Benson was 3-for-6 on conversion kicks for six points.

Traverse Bay lead 12-0 at halftime.

"We achieved our goals of winning, securing a bonus point and playing solid defense for a full 80-minute match, which we did," Blues coach Tony Dell'Acqua said. "Defense brought this victory and the league championship home."

Traverse Bay last won the league in 2006.

Lantz was selected as the man of the match.
