JENISON -- Traverse City Central's Doug Burke upset No. 5 seed Greg Anastasio of North Farmington 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 in a second-round match at No. 2 singles in the Division 2 state tennis finals in Jenison on Friday.
The finals, scheduled for Jenison High School, were moved to three indoor facilities in the area due to the weather.
Burke and Anastasio had first-round byes.
"That was a huge win," Central coach Larry Nykerk said.
Central, which has seven points, also picked up wins from Spencer Powell at No. 3 singles, Riley Chadwell and Harry Malone at No. 2 doubles, Glover Kosch and Hunter Bergsma at No. 3 doubles and Michael Leigh and Dan Spencer at No. 4 doubles.
Powell defeated Lapeer East's Chris Frezza 6-2, 6-3, and then lost to No. 2 seed Jesse Chen of Rochester Adams 6-2, 6-0.
Chadwell and Malone opened with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Holly's Matt Kahn and Brandon VanWallagan. The duo then almost stunned No. 1 seeds Ed Benda an Tucker Blake of Birmingham Seaholm, falling 1-6, 6-4, 7-6. Chadwell and Malone led 3-0 and 5-2 in the final set.
Kosch and Bergsma topped Dexter's Peter Washabaugh and Scott Repine 6-2, 6-1, then lost a tough three-setter to Seaholm's Matt Vanderhoef and Michael Isaacs 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Vanderhoef and Isaacs are a No. 3 seed.
Leigh and Spencer defeated U-D Jesuit's Joey Greenwald and David Wilson 7-6, 6-3 in their first-round match.
At No. 1 singles, Fischer Sutherland lost to North Farmington's Todd Jaffe 6-3, 6-4. Ethan Weckstein dropped a 6-4, 7-6 match to Lapeer East's Scott Schneider at No. 4 singles.
At No. 1 doubles, Jack Milliken and Ben Watts fell to Jay Joshi and Cameron Wooley of Rochester Adams 6-2, 6-4.
"I was pleased with how well we played," Nykerk said. "We had some great performances, even though we didn't win some of those matches."
In Division 3 at Kalamazoo, Petoskey failed to win a match.
In Division 4 at Michigan State, Elk Rapids' Aaron Mayes and Manistee's Justin Marzinski won first-round matches before they were eliminated. Mayes beat Calvin Christian's Brian DeMaagd 6-1, 6-4, while Marzinski topped North Pointe Christian's Paul Hagerman 6-0, 6-0.
St. Francis' Ben Schippers won his first two matches at No. 3 singles. He beat Richmond's Ross Stuart 6-4, 6-2 and Kalamazoo Christian's Jeff DeNooyer 6-4, 6-0.
Elk Rapids' Dan Worth won his first match at No. 3 singles, beating Grosse Ile's Sachin Gandhi 6-0, 6-0. He lost in the second round.
St. Francis' Mac Hughes won his first match, downing North Muskegon's Nick Huryk.
All four Harbor Springs singles players lost their first match.
No results in the doubles flights were available at deadline.
