Titans win last two games to capture match

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West handed Cadillac its first Big North Conference loss of the season Wednesday night with a 25-15, 12-25, 25-20, 25-21 win over the Vikings.

"Consistency," West coach Emily Baumann said of the key to the game. "We played smart. We put the ball in play. We did not make errors.

"We came out strong. We defended our court."

West improved to 6-2 in league play and 15-9-1 overall with the victory.

The Titans were paced by Katie Placek (18 kills, six blocks, 10 digs), Courtney VanHouzen (11 kills, 15 digs), Anna O'Hara (13 kills), and McKenna Ray (13 digs).

The West JV post a 26-24, 27-25, 17-25 win. The Titans were led by Carley Drzewiecki (six kills, 10 digs, one ace), Maggie Gray (six kills, four digs, one ace), Kelly O'Hara (19 assists, four kills, three digs), Leah Skeels (22 digs, three aces, two kills). The Titans are now 8-0 in the league, 19-1 overall.

West travels to Alpena next Wednesday.

The Titans' freshman team won 25-11, 26-24, 19-25.

TC West (7-1 in BNC play) avenged its only league loss, led by Olivia Bishop (three aces, six kills), Paige Ligon (six assists) and Sarah Patten (five assists, two kills).

Petoskey      3 TC Central      0

Traverse City Central fell to .500 in Big North Conference play with a 16-25, 16-25, 15-25 loss to Petoskey.

The Trojans (18-12-2, 4-4 BNC) were led by Jessie Kushner (seven kills, two aces), Maddy Duensing (19 assists, two aces) and Kiley Kowal (five kills).

Central won the JV matchup 25-16, 19-25, 25-21 behind strong play from Megan Eshleman, Cara Ferguson, Hannah Nordeen and Sierra Fraser. The win improves the Trojans' record to 8-1 against BNC opponents.

TC St. Francis      3 Kalkaska      0

St. Francis remained unbeaten in the Lake Michigan Conference with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-10 win over Kalkaska.

The Gladiators (26-4-3, 8-0) were led by Bridget Bussell (13 kills, two blocks), Haley Bussell (five digs), Kaitlyn Hegewald (27 assists, five digs, four kills, three aces), Madeline Rysztak (eight kills, five aces) and Leah Schmerheim (four kills).

St. Francis, which also won the JV match, hosts Grayling next Wednesday.

Elk Rapids      2 Grayling      0

Elk Rapids bounced back from a loss to Petoskey with a 2-0 shutout of Grayling the very next day.

The Elks received goals from Talon Felker and Austin McMullen. Andy Atkinson added an assist.

Miguel Alvarado and Andrew Selvy split time in goal for Elk Rapids (12-4), which hosts Boyne City on Wednesday.

Northport      8 Buckley      0

Bill Stowe scored a hat trick and Alex Thelander had five points as Northport posted an 8-0 victory over Buckley.

Thelander scored one goal himself and assisted on four others.

Caleb Brown pitched in two goals and Armando Hernandez and Ian Machir each had one.

Ricky Roman was in goal for the shutout, making five saves.

The Wildcats (8-7) host Harbor Light on Saturday.

TC Christian     5 Benzie Central     1

Jon Tuck netted two goals as Traverse City Christian defeated Benzie Central 5-1.

Jared Argyle came up from the backfield to tally his first of the season. Ian Spencer and Jacob Rorick also scored for the Sabres (14-2).

Benzie netted the game's first goal by Janfred Wemken.

Leland     8 Suttons Bay     0

Dylan Jolliffe scored four goals and assisted on a fifth as Leland defeated Suttons Bay 8-0 in Great Northwest play.

Jolliffe now has 50 goals on the season for the Comets (17-3, 8-2).

Matt Fleis, Cam Stowe, Will Gauthier and Ian Duvall also tallied. Luke Nesbitt drew two assists. Mike Farese had the shutout in goal.

Leland travels to Benzie on Monday.

TENNIS

St. Francis wins quad

Traverse City St. Francis won seven of eight flights to run away with a quad meet at Boyne City.

The Gladiators won every match but one on the day, ending up with 23 points. Harbor Springs was second with 17, Charlevoix six and Boyne City two.

Harbor's Sam Dart was the only non-SF player to claim a flight, taking No. 1 singles with a 3-0 record and a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Glads' Sam Holmes, who was 2-1.

The rest of the flight winners all came from TCSF, with Gus Danz, Jack Krcmarik and Patrick Burke taking the other singles flgiths, and Dan Wilson/Tanner Hobbs, Blake Bandrowski/Chase Richmond, Evan Primeau/Ben Alpers and Cole Gingras/Jay Jones in doubles.

TC Central JV Gold     4 St Francis JV     4

The Traverse City Central JV Gold tied the St. Francis JV 4-4.

Central picked up wins from Andrew Froese/Ben Grams, Ben Cockfield/Luke Fagerstrom, Nate Michno/Nick Friedli and Noah McKenzie/Mack Galante.
