Sabres beat Leland for 2nd time this season

TRAVERSE CITY — Going into Thursday's tilt, TC Christian and Leland each had a win again the other team.

In the third outing, the Sabres had a big defensive outing and earned a 4-0 Great Northwest Conference win over the Comets.

"Our defense was absolutely solid tonight," said Sabres coach Ron Christie in praising Daniel Weber, Jared Argyle, Wes Nelson and Cam Beemer.

Jon Tuck and Paul Bump each scored twice for the Sabres (14-2, 8-0 GNW), who led 1-0 at the half. Brad Benson and Ian Spencer each had two assists.

David Bump made 11 saves for the shutout. TC Christian travels to North Muskegon today.


TC West      8 Gaylord      0

TC West moved to 8-0-1 in the Big North Conference with an 8-0 win over Gaylord.

The Titans (11-3-2) had two goals each from Daniel Montgomery and Josh Stiglich while Brandon Montgomery and Jack Lhamon each had a goal and an assist. Brad Richey and Noah Cobb each had a goal, Ty Troxell had two assists while Cameron Sipple and Nico Ragel-Wilson each had an assist.

Noah Withey got the shutout.

Petoskey      2 TC Central      0

Petoskey handed TC Central a 2-0 Big North Conference loss, giving TC West a one-game lead over the Trojans in the league standings.

The Northmen (8-7-1, 7-2 BNC) got both goals from Matt Dankert off assists from Evan Altman and Hunter Viles.

The Trojans (9-5-3, 6-1-2 BNC) had six shots on goal. Colin Lesoski made three saves in the loss.

TC Central won the JV game 3-2 after trailing 2-0 at half. Josh Belcher, Lars Hornburg and Danny Brott all scored while Scottie May had an assist. Elliot Stratton had four saves.


Benzie wins a trio of matches

Benzie Central won all three matches in a home quad meet.

The Huskies topped Lake City (25-2, 25-13), Marion (25-15, 25-16) and Kingsley (25-18, 21-25, 15-10).

For the evening, Benzie was led by Molly Lehn (41 assists, 12 digs), Jenna Gauthier (15 kills, eight blocks, 27 digs, 11 aces), Autumn Hagelstien (six kills, eight blocks), Madison Lutzke (25 kills, 15 digs) and Maggie Geetings (six aces, four kills).

The Huskies (23-3-10) travel Tuesday to Buckley.

Leland      3 TC Christian      0

Leland picked up a 25-17, 25-15, 25-15 non-conference win over host TC Christian.

The Comets (27-7-2) were without two starters. Andrea Hunt had nine kills, Noa Yaakoby had 10 kills and four aces, Felicia Whittaker had three kills and six digs, Heather Burns had three kills while Caitlin McKee had 24 assists and two aces.

The Sabres (12-16-2) had six kills, a block and an ace from Maddie White, Mikayla Brett had three kills, Amanda Ufer had two kills and Laura Murray had two aces.

Leland is at Kingsley on Tuesday while TC Christian is off for a week.

Boyne City      3 Kalkaska     0

Boyne City swept a Lake Michigan Conference match from Kalkaska, winning 25-13, 25-21, 25-20.

Playing without top hitter Kyle Hicks due to a wrist injury, the Ramblers (20-7-4, 8-1 LMC) were led by Paige Hornbeck (nine kills), Heather Nichols (18 digs, 24 assists), Mary Myers (six kills) and Rainy McCune (18 digs, eight aces).


TC St. Francis      6 Leelanau County      2

Traverse City St. Francis won all four doubles flights to claim a 6-2 victory over Leelanau County.

The Gladiators received wins from Dan Wilson/Tanner Hobbs (6-4, 6-2), Blake Bandrowski/Chase Richmond (6-2, 6-2), Corey Boudrie/Evan Primeau (6-1, 6-0) and Cole Gingras/Jay Jones (7-5, 5-7, 10-7).

Jack Krcmarik won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Patrick Burke earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4.

Leelanau's wins came from Parker Kokowicz (3-6, 6-2, 12-10) at No. 1 singles and Leif Mohrman (6-3, 6-7, 7-3) at No. 2.

St. Francis travels to Saturday's Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian Invitational.

Ludington JV      5 TC Central JV Gold      3

Traverse City Central's JV Gold won a trio of matches in a 5-3 setback to Ludington.

The Trojans' victors were Josh Green, Nate Michno/Nick Friedli and Noah McKenzie/Mack Galante.


Glen Lake wins Farwell Invitational

Glen Lake had a season-best 404 to win the Farwell Invitational at Eagle Glen.

The Lakers will return to the course in a couple of weeks for regionals.

Nicole Pace was fifth overall with a 96 while Madison Hill shot 98 for seventh. Skylar Gleason and Melanie Kulanda each had a 105.


TC Central JV      54 TC West JV      12

Sean Williams accounted for four touchdowns as Traverse City Central won 54-12 in the junior varsity clash with Traverse City West.

Williams ran for two touchdowns, completed a scoring pass to Russell Isaac and had an interception return for a touchdown.

Anthony Kratovil added two rushing touchdowns, Cam Wang recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a TD and Drew Girard ran 10 times for 110 yards and a touchdown.

The Trojans (4-1-1) led 41-0 at halftime. Their defense was led by Bronson Wood (six tackles for loss) and Dan Youker (three tackles for loss).

TC St. Francis JV      39 Charlevoix JV      8

Jake Klingelsmith and Jake Summers each ran for more than 100 yards and accounted for five touchdowns as Traverse City St. Francis topped Charlevoix 39-8 in a junior varsity football tilt.

Summers scored on TD runs of 1, 8 and 8 yards, while Klingelsmith struck from 12 and 72 yards out.

Joe Coates added a 59-yard TD pass to Joe Trucco and a two-point conversion pass to Tyler Picardat. Klingelsmith kicked one extra point.

Charlevoix (4-2) scored on an Austin Putman 55-yard pass to Ben Boss and a KeNen Borths conversion run.

Ryan Armour, Summers, Tristan Boomer and Robbie Williams led the Gladiator (3-3) defense.
