TRAVERSE CITY — Adam Stepan scored with about 10 minutes remaining Saturday as Traverse City Central handed Midland its first loss of the soccer season, 2-1.
Owen Stratton drew the assist on Stepan's goal.
Midland is now 9-1-1.
Reilly deTar had scored in the first half for the Trojans (9-4-2) off an assist from Stepan. It was 1-1 at the break.
Colin Lesoski turned aside eight shots in goal.
Coach Rob Boynton said Central's play at midfield was the key.
"Our midfielders controlled the pace of the game," he said. "And, when we did get opportunities, we finished."
Central's JV team posted a 2-0 win. Josh Armour and Ben Kunz tallied for Central (9-2-1). Jack Brewer and Alex Oliver picked up assists. Elliot Stratton had two saves in goal.
Mason 2 TC West 0
Traverse City West fell to 9-3-2 with a 2-0 setback at Mason.
The Titans won the JV game 4-0 as Scott Wesenberg and Nico Ragel-Wilson netted two goals apiece. Jacob Casciano had the shutout in goal.
West is at Ogemaw Heights on Tuesday.
Benzie wins Silver bracket at Cadillac
Benzie Central won the Silver bracket in the Cadillac Invitational, beating Pine River 14-25, 25-19, 15-12 in the final.
The Huskies (19-3-10) finished 5-1 on the day. They beat Northport (25-14, 25-10), lost to White Cloud (22-25, 15-25) and then downed Grand Ledge (25-21, 21-25, 15-10), Central Lake (25-11, 25-14), Marion (25-15, 25-12) and Pine River.
Benzie was led by Molly Lehn (265 assists, 37 digs), Jenna Gauthier (21 kills, 12 aces, 25 blocks, 72 digs), Madison Lutzke (64 kills, seven aces, 14 blocks, 38 digs), Autumn Hagelstein (12 kills, 32 blocks), Maggie Geetings (49 assists, 14 kills, 38 digs), Kelsey Judge (48 digs) and Emily Scott (62 digs).
Leland lost to Grand Ledge 19-25, 19-25 in the quarterfinals of the Gold bracket.
The Comets went 2-1 in pool play, beating Central Lake (25-18, 25-17), losing to Mount Pleasant (25-22, 21-25, 11-15) and topping Pine River (25-22, 25-19).
Leland (25-7-2) was paced by Brooke Olesnavage (52 kills, 28 digs, five aces), Sammie Sterkenburg (10 kills, four aces, 37 assists), Caitlin McKee (49 assists, 18 digs), Annalise Robinson (11 aces, 22 digs), Felicia Whittaker (10 kills, six digs), Noa Yaakoby (15 kills, eight digs) and Maggie Osorio (four aces, 51 digs).
Traverse City Christian finished 1-3. The Sabres lost to Reed City (20-25, 16-25) and Fremont (14-25, 6-25), beat Marion (25-22, 21-25, 15-11), and fell to Pine River (17-25, 18-25).
The Sabres (11-15-5) were led by Laura Murray (10 kills, one ace, three blocks, 11 digs, 95 percent serving), Maddie White (16 kills, 95 percent serving with four aces, four blocks, five digs), Shannon Ufer (22 assists, three kills, five aces, eight digs), Aubrey Heersema (23 assists, eight kills, one block, four digs) and Amanda Ufer (11 kills, 95 percent serving with three aces, 11 digs).
Kingsley wins title at Grayling Invite
Kingsley rallied to beat Roscommon 20-25, 25-23, 15-9 in the championship game of the Grayling Invitational.
Kingsley went 6-0-2 on the day. The Stags beat Johannesburg-Lewiston (25-21, 25-23), Bellaire (25-15, 25-21), lost to Gaylord (18-25, 22-25), beat Grayling (25-14, 25-19), split with Roscommon (25-14, 16-25) and beat Posen (25-23, 25-16) in pool play.
In the semifinals, Kingsley defeated Gaylord (25-15, 26-25).
Leading the way for Kingsley: Katie Travis (85 kills, 19 digs, five blocks, 93 of 94 serving), Leah Hall (132 assists, 20 digs, 67 of 69 serving), Kenzie Meeker (21 kills, 68 digs, 61 of 61 serving), Amanda Youker (27 kills, nine blocks), Lindsey Weber (24 digs, 45 of 45 serving), Andrea Lee (12 kills, four blocks) and Lilly Travis (18 kills, 22 digs, 61 of 63 serving).
West reaches semifinals at Portage Northern
Traverse City West reached the semifinals of the Gold bracket before losing to Battle Creek St. Phil 14-25, 17-25 in the Portage Northern Invitational.
Earlier, the Titans beat Otsego (25-12, 25-17), split with Grandville (25-16, 20-25), and beat Unity Christian (25-11, 25-16), Okemos (25-22, 25-22), and Flushing (26-24, 20-25, 15-10).
West (9-7-1) was powered by Katie Placek (39 kills, 52 digs), Courtney VanHouzen (46 kills, 35 digs), Kimmy Bilinski (24 digs), Anna O'Hara (31 kills, 14 digs), Ally Peters (86 assists, 17 digs) and McKenna Ray (20 digs).
Divers spark TC to win at Falcon Invite
Traverse City swept the top four spots in diving en route to capturing the Falcon Invitational at Ogemaw Heights.
Traverse City finished with 379.5 points. Gaylord was second with 367.
The divers accounted for 52 points. Suha Augenstein took first (184.10). She was followed by Lily Bussineau (172.2), Samantha Neddo (172) and Jami Chung (157.35).
Erin Cover enjoyed a big day, too,. She won the 50 freestyle (26.74) and was on the victorious 200 freestyle relay with Lauren Pflughoeft, Rose Cook and Olivia Verellen (1:55:34). Cover placed second in the 100 freestyle (58.21).
Becky Stanwick came in second in the 200 freestyle (2:28.19) and teamed with Verellen, Cover, and Pflughoeft to take second in the 200 medley relay (2:09.23).
Pflughoeft took third in the 500 freestyle (6:23.69) and Amy Brinkerhoff third in the 200 freestyle (2:28.19).
Trojans 7th, Titans 9th at Jackson Invite
The Traverse City Central boys finished seventh and Traverse City West ninth in the Jackson Invitational.
The Trojans had 202 points, the Titans 259.
For Central, Cam McAuliffe placed 18th (16:34), Anthony Berry 32nd (16:45), Nicholas Tarsa 40th (16:53), Kyle Dotterrer 46th (17:00) and Chris Brower 66th (17:25).
For West, Alec Ondrajka finished 34th (16:47), Kieran Hall 37th (16:48), Alex Garvin 53rd (17:06), Jimmy Seekamp 62nd (17:20) and Nick Hirschenberger 73rd (17:28).
In an upset, Grand Blanc, ranked No. 7 in Division I, beat top-ranked Saline 81-87 for the title.
West girls 8th at Jackson Invite
Freshman Jessica Gockley came in eighth overall to lead the Traverse City West girls to an eighth-place finish in the 23-team Jackson Invitational.
Gockley was timed in 19:00.6.
Kayla Norris finished 52nd (20:36.7), Emily O'Leary 67th (21:06), Corinne Schrotenboer 74th (21:11.6) and Janese Gockley 79th (21:15.6) for the Titans.
The West JV placed second overall. For the Titans, Quinn Hall took fifth (21:15.7), Kate Melvin 10th (21:49), Morgan Culp 18th (22:25), Jacqueline Pardee 19th (22:26) and Haley Dole 23rd (22:36).
South Lyon wins at Petoskey, Central 3rd
South Lyon captured the Petoskey Invitational, holding off the host Northmen and Traverse City Central.
South Lyon had a combined time (top five runners in 11th-12th grade division, and top five in 9th-10th grade division) of 1:27.2 Petoskey was second with 1:31.39. Central took third at 1:31.55
For the Trojans in the 11th-12th grade division, Marco Morcote was 10th (18:08), Josh Rose 15th (18:18), Johnny Ackley 17th (18:39), Forest Lewallen 23rd (18:47) and Graham Vivier 26th (18:50).
In the 9th-10th grade division, Jordan Query placed sixth (18:15), Noah Pickett 12th (18:35), William Chown 13th (18:39), Jim VanderBosch 17th (19:02) and Tyler Sepanik 18th (19:11).
