Traverse City Record-Eagle
PETOSKEY — Jordan Birdsey scored an unassisted goal in the final minute Saturday as the Traverse City Central JV tied Detroit Jesuit 1-1 in the Petoskey Invitational.
Grant Lesoski had 12 saves in goal for the Trojans (2-0-1).
Earlier in the day, Central defeated Marquette 2-1 on goals by A.J. Samba and Rob Morse. Marshall Mast drew an assist. Lesoski stopped six shots.
The Trojans are at Alpena on Tuesday.
New Lothrop JV 20
St,. Francis JV 8
Brodie Bennett threw two touchdown passes Friday as the New Lothrop JV beat St. Francis 20-8.
Trent Peterson was on the receiving end of one of the scoring tosses. Peterson also scored on a seven-yard run.
St. Francis got on the board in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard run by Tristan Boomer. Jake Kingelsmith ran in the two-point conversion.
The Gladiators face Gaylord on Friday.
Doubles flights leads Titans in tourney
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West's four doubles teams all took second in the recent Up North Invitational.
The Titans were second as a team.
At No. 1 doubles, John Linenger andTaylor Brown had wins over Alpena (6-3, 1-6, 11-9) and Petoskey (6-3, 6-3). At No. 2, Mitch Winowiecki and Kieran Laursen had a shutout over Alpena (6-0, 6-0). At No. 3, Jake Newhouse and Sam VanHoorne also beat Alpena (6-1, 6-0). David Mather and Erik Anton posted wins over Alpena (6-0, 6-3) and Cadillac (6-1, 6-1) at No. 4.
In addition, Henry Linenger finished second at No. 3 singles with a win over Petoskey (6-1, 6-3).
Registration deadline nears for fall program
TRAVERSE CITY — The registration deadline for the YMCA co-ed flag football instructional program is Tuesday.
The program is for girls and boys new to the sport as well as those not quite ready for tackle football, who want to learn how to play the sport. All games are officiated. Each team will be coached by volunteer parents and community members with a focus on participation and sportsmanship. Each team will have one built-in evening practice followed by one game a week. The six-week league is offered to children in grades 2-5. The program begins the week of Monday, Sept. 16 and ends Friday, Oct. 25. Call 933-9622 or visit www.gtbayymca.org for more information.
