TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central ski coach Jerry Stanek likes the way his girls finish.

He would just like better starts, that's all.

For the second consecutive meet, the Trojans had to rally in the afternoon's giant slalom to beat Petoskey in a Big North Conference meet, 41-58. Central trailed by three points after the slalom.

"Petoskey skis a good slalom," Stanek said. "Giant slalom seems to be our event.

"I'm not liking that scenario, though. I don't like trailing."

Central put four skiers in the top six in giant slalom to earn the win. Shannon Weaver led the way, winning in 48.73. Madison Ostergren was second (49.10), Cassidy Klein fourth (51.05) and Devon Dotterrer sixth (51.78).

West, which finished third overall, put two in the top seven — Monica Hessler placed third (49.75) and Morgan Culp seventh (51.94).

Hessler captured the morning's slalom (45.29) for the Titans. Culp took sixth (50.16), Kitt Hornbogen 10th (51.16) and Devan Gorton 17th (55.80).

Ostergren and Klein paced the Trojans, finishing second and third (47.31 and 47.77). Molly Whiting 11th (52.4) and Weaver 12th (52.73).

Petoskey rallied to win the boys race with 54 points. Cadillac took second (76), Central third (77) and West fourth (79).

The Titans led by five points after the morning's giant slalom. West's Matt Lowe won the event in 45.46. Finley Clark took fifth (46.77), Austin Skibowski ninth (47.38) and Ben Friar ninth (48.68).

Central's Kalvis Hornburg finished sixth (46.95), Kurt Frick eighth (47.14), Dirk Phelps 11th (48.02) and Lars Hornburg 12th (48.03).

In the slalom, Petoskey's placed four in the top 10 to battle back for the win. Noah Honaker was the overall winner in 45,341.

For West, Clark placed second (45.64), Lowe seventh (47.47), Skibowski 19th (1:00.04) and Friar 23rd (1:04.11).

For Central, Phelps placed eighth (47.89), Lars Hornburg ninth (48.29), Frick 11th (48.92) and John Whiting 12th (49.22).

"We started out with a really strong morning," West coach Ed Johnson said. "It was exciting to see Matt Lowe and Monica Hessler win both of the morning events. They've been coming along. I think we'll see a lot more of that out of both of those two."

Johnson said things fell apart a little bit in the afternoon, especially for the boys, but he's excited about the progress his team has made so far.
