Roundup: Elks, Sabres to meet

ELK RAPIDS — Elk Rapids and Traverse City Christian will collide Saturday in the Division 3 soccer district final here.

The Elks advanced with an 8-0 win over Grayling on Thursday while Christian upended Benzie Central 7-0.

For Elk Rapids (17-5), Spencer LaPointe scored three goals while Austin McMullen and Jesse Starr each had a goal and two assists.

Andy Atkinson and Talon Felker had a goal and an assist for the Elks while Noah Dietrich also scored. Timmy Barber got the shutout.

Jacob Rorick scored four goals in Christian's win. Jon Tuck, Cam Beemer and freshman Dashill Dryden also tallied.

"Our defense did a terrific job," Sabres coach Ron Christie said. "(Goalie) David Bump hardly took any shots on net."

The Sabres are 19-2.


Leland     3 TC Christian     0

Leland raised its record to 37-9-4, but more importantly raised money for a local 33-year-old father who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.

The Comets defeated Traverse City Christian 25-12, 25-17, 25-10 in their Dig Pink game.

Leland was led by Brooke Olesnavage (18 kills, two aces), Sammie Sterkenburg (nine assists, two kills), Andrea Hunt (four kills, five aces), Felicia Whittaker (three kills), Noa Yaakoby (four kills) and Caitlin McKee (13 assists, two aces).

Christian was paced by Laura Murray (four kills, two aces, three digs), Maddie White (six kills, one block, four digs, one ace), Mikayla Brett (two kills, two digs) and Aubrey Heersema (one block, four digs, six assists).

Forest Area     3 Suttons Bay     0

Kortni Birgy's 12 kills and nine aces led Forest Area to a 25-8, 25-5, 25-18 win over Suttons Bay.

Megan Gifford (19 assists), Emily Gonyer (five kills, 15 digs), Jackie Hyatt (eight kills) and Cami Campbell (floor game) also starred for the Warriors (37, 9-4).

Kingsley splits pair in tri-meet

Kingsley defeated Roscommon 25-19, 25-21, then dropped a three-setter to McBain 25-22, 19-25, 13-15.

Kingsley, now 39-9-5, was led by Katie Travis (24 kills, 17 digs, two blocks), Leah Hall (seven kills, 55 assists, nine digs, 23 of 23 serving), Kenzie Meeker (eight kills, 17 digs, 13 of 14 serving), Lilly Travis (12 kills, 20 digs, 21 of 21 serving), Andrea Lee (seven kills, two blocks), Amanda Youker (four kills, six blocks) and Katie Garey (seven digs, 18 of 19 serving).
