Bellaire braves elements to post 54-33 road victory

MANCELONA — The 12-mile trip through a blizzard was worth it.

Bellaire was the only northern Michigan basketball team to brave the elements and venture out for a game — and the Eagles were rewarded with a 54-33 win.

“We’re only a few miles apart, so it wasn’t bad,” Bellaire coach Brad Fisher said. “Our roads are clean, and the wind wasn’t bad. Still, a lot of fans were there.”

Leighten Koepke scored 16 of Bellaire’s 20 second-quarter points to finish with 21, adding six rebounds and six assists.

Madalyn Balon chipped in 14 points, four rebounds and three steals and Tiffany Clovis contributed nine points and three steals for the Eagles (9-2, 7-1 Ski Valley Conference).

Freshman Eileene Naniseni led Mancelona with 14 points.

Bellaire led by only five at halftime, but went on a 25-9 second-half binge, including holding the Lady Ironmen (4-6, 3-5 SVC) without a point for the entire fourth quarter.

The Eagles hit on eight of 17 attempts from 3-point range.
