Burt Lake's Chatfield ties state record for career goals

Five-goal outing vs. Cheboygan gives him 172 for his career

from staff reports

CHEBOYGAN — Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy's Aaron Chatfield tied a state record Wednesday in the Eagles 6-1 Northern Michigan Soccer League win over Cheboygan.

Chatfield netted five goals, bringing his career total to 172. That ties him with Dearborn's Soony Saad for most goals in a career.

His reaction after tying the mark with about five minutes left Wednesday?

"Relieved," said his coach and older brother Lee. "He doesn't talk about it, he's focused on winning, but I think this helps take a burden off his back."

Chatfield actually entered the contest in fourth place, trailing Saad, his brother Nathan Chatfield (170), and Watervliet Grace Christian's Ryan Brenneman (169).

Nathan, who played at Burt Lake NMCA from 2001-2004, still holds the state record for career assists (102) and career points (272). Aaron is currently second in career points with 261. Two other brothers are in the top 10 in career points — Paul with 191 and Spencer with 189.

Chatfield will get a chance to break the tie Friday when the Eagles (8-5, 5-0) travel to Elk Rapids.

Josiah Fosmore added a goal and an assist in the win.
