Whittaker pours in 23 points and grabs 21 boards

LELAND — Host Leland opened the Northwest Conference on Thursday with a 55-42 win over Benzie Central.

The Comets (2-1, 1-0 NWC) had a big night from A.J. Whittaker, who scored 23 points to go with 21 rebounds. Dylan Jolliffe chipped in 19 points.

For the Huskies (0-3, 0-1 NWC), Corey Weaver had 13 points while Nathan Oren had 10 points.

Leland hosts Mesick on Tuesday.

BOYS

Kingsley      64 Mesick      53

Kingsley broke the game open with a big third quarter for a 64-53 Northwest Conference win over Mesick.

The Stags (2-2, 1-0 NWC) led 27-25 at the half, but then scored 25 points in the third quarter off five 3-pointers.

Travis DeBello had 18 points for Kingsley while Jared Lueck scored 13 points and Tyler Newell had 11 points.

Thane Herbert led the Bulldogs with 26 points.

Glen Lake      61 Suttons Bay      41

Glen Lake shook off a slow start for a 61-41 Northwest Conference win over Suttons Bay.

The Lakers (3-1, 1-0 NWC) trailed 7-4 at the end of the first quarter, but led 22-13 at the half.

Mike O'Brien had 26 points for Glen Lake while Logan LaCross had 10 points.

Logan Mikesell had 12 points for the Norse while Cam Tarlton had 10 points.

Glen Lake plays Buckley on Tuesday.

Frankfort      67 Buckley      28

Frankfort notched a 67-28 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.

The Panthers had 14 points from David Loney while Brandon Schaub scored 13 points.

Michael Baldinger had eight points for the Bears.

TC West      55 Ogemaw Heights      40

Jeremiah Williams scored 16 points as TC West opened Big North Conference play with a 55-40 win over Ogemaw Heights.

Williams also had eight rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Titans (2-1, 1-0 BNC). Donny Cizek had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, Nate Castor had eight points and three assists, Kendrick Meyer had seven points and four steals while Stephen Sheppard had six points off a pair of big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

For Ogemaw Heights, Alec Stevens had 12 points.

TC West hosts Cadillac on Tuesday.

TC West won the JV game 61-29 as 12 players scored in the win. Thiyo Lukusa had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Adam Peplinski and Paul Soma each had seven points.

In the freshman game, the Titans won 60-22. Jake Cerny had 17 points while Dakota Castor added nine.

St. Francis      74 Gaylord      61

St. Francis had big nights from Kody Kleinrichert and Damon Sheehy in a 74-61 non-conference win at Gaylord.

Kleinrichert had 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Gladiators (3-0) while Sheehy had 14 points, 13 assists and three steals. Connor Archer added 15 points and eight rebounds.

For Gaylord, Tyler Frisch had 21 points and Zach Lundell added 18.

The Blue Devils won the JV game 68-40.

St. Francis hosts Birmingham Brother Rice on Saturday.

Bellaire      68 Central Lake      15

Bellaire had at least a point from 11 of its 12 players in a 68-15 Ski Valley Conference win over Central Lake.

The Eagles (3-0, 1-0 SVC) had 15 points from Tyler Thornton and 13 points from Denny Hall. As a team, they out-rebounded the Trojans 31-18.

Will Brockman had seven points for Central Lake.

Onaway      63 Gaylord St. Mary      51

Onaway picked up a 63-51 Ski Valley Conference win over Onaway.

The Cardinals had 25 points from Joe O'Bradovich.

Forest Area      79 Joburg      63

Forest Area jumped out to a 26-8 first-quarter lead and used it for a 79-63 Ski Valley Conference win over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

The Warriors (2-1, 2-0 SVC) had 23 points and four assists from Chad Roberts while Justin Burke had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Dominic Kelly had 17 points and Austin Vance had nine points, four rebounds and three assists.

Cameron Nickert scored 19 points for the Cardinals.

Manistee Catholic      65 Mason Co. Eastern      60

Manistee Catholic had a big second half in a 65-60 win over Mason Co. Eastern.

The Sabers trailed 22-16 at the end of the first quarter as Mason Co. Eastern made nine of its 15 shots. The Cardinals made it a 10-point lead at the half, but Manistee Catholic fought back to tie the game going into the fourth quarter.

Zack Bialik had 32 points and 11 rebounds for the Sabers, who were only playing with six players. Ben Feliczak had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Alex Bialik had 12 points, eight assists and two steals.

Austin Martin scored 16 points to lead the Cardinals.

TC Prep      47 Skeels Christian      25

TC Prep played its first game of the year and picked up a 47-25 win over Skeels Christian.

TC had 21 points from Julian McCuien and 17 points from Ricky Steffe.

Lake City      56 LL St. Mary's     31

Lake City picked up a 56-31 non-conference win over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.

The Trojans had 15 points from Kevin Kunkel while Ryan Vincent scored 10 points.

Brendon McSawby had 12 points for the Eagles while Drew Poboda scored 10 points.

GIRLS

Buckley      34 GT Academy      32

Buckley picked up a 34-32 non-conference win over Grand Traverse Academy.

Bailee Kuhn led the Bears with 17 points and six rebounds while Clarice Tahl had eight rebounds and two steals.

The Mustangs had 11 points from Tiffany Wright while Dakota Morgan and Alena Peck each scored six.
