Whittaker pours in 23 points and grabs 21 boards

LELAND — Host Leland opened the Northwest Conference on Thursday with a 55-42 win over Benzie Central.

The Comets (2-1, 1-0 NWC) had a big night from A.J. Whittaker, who scored 23 points to go with 21 rebounds. Dylan Jolliffe chipped in 19 points.

For the Huskies (0-3, 0-1 NWC), Corey Weaver had 13 points while Nathan Oren had 10 points.

Leland hosts Mesick on Tuesday.


Kingsley      64 Mesick      53

Kingsley broke the game open with a big third quarter for a 64-53 Northwest Conference win over Mesick.

The Stags (2-2, 1-0 NWC) led 27-25 at the half, but then scored 25 points in the third quarter off five 3-pointers.

Travis DeBello had 18 points for Kingsley while Jared Lueck scored 13 points and Tyler Newell had 11 points.

Thane Herbert led the Bulldogs with 26 points.

Glen Lake      61 Suttons Bay      41

Glen Lake shook off a slow start for a 61-41 Northwest Conference win over Suttons Bay.

The Lakers (3-1, 1-0 NWC) trailed 7-4 at the end of the first quarter, but led 22-13 at the half.

Mike O'Brien had 26 points for Glen Lake while Logan LaCross had 10 points.

Logan Mikesell had 12 points for the Norse while Cam Tarlton had 10 points.

Glen Lake plays Buckley on Tuesday.

Frankfort      67 Buckley      28

Frankfort notched a 67-28 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.

The Panthers had 14 points from David Loney while Brandon Schaub scored 13 points.

Michael Baldinger had eight points for the Bears.

TC West      55 Ogemaw Heights      40

Jeremiah Williams scored 16 points as TC West opened Big North Conference play with a 55-40 win over Ogemaw Heights.

Williams also had eight rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Titans (2-1, 1-0 BNC). Donny Cizek had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, Nate Castor had eight points and three assists, Kendrick Meyer had seven points and four steals while Stephen Sheppard had six points off a pair of big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

For Ogemaw Heights, Alec Stevens had 12 points.

TC West hosts Cadillac on Tuesday.

TC West won the JV game 61-29 as 12 players scored in the win. Thiyo Lukusa had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Adam Peplinski and Paul Soma each had seven points.

In the freshman game, the Titans won 60-22. Jake Cerny had 17 points while Dakota Castor added nine.
