Girls basketball win is Huskies' 1st over Trojans

From staff reports

BENZONIA — For the first time, Benzie Central notched a girls basketball victory over Traverse City Central.

The Huskies rallied from down 24-16 at halftime to topple the Trojans 42-39 Wednesday night.

The two teams had played every year except 2011 since the series began in 1999.

"Central played really great defense in the first half and we didn't match it," Benzie coach Mark Blazejewski said. "We made a couple adjustments in the second half and it made a few more opportunities to score inside. The kids did a good job adjusting their game."

Jordan Nye's reverse layup with 20 seconds left put Benzie up three points before Central's Jesse Hiemstral cut it to one with a bucket.

Benzie's Makayla Huddleston knocked down a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to re-establish the three-point advantage and the Trojans had a 3-pointer hit the rim at the final buzzer.

The Huskies (3-2) were led by Mary Warsecke's career-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds. Nye added 11 points and seven boards, while Paige Sauer chipped in seven points, three steals and four assists.

Central's Tyler Rawlings was a big reason the Trojans led at halftime. She knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 18 of her 21 points in the first half — and accounted for all but six points of Central's first-half output.

Madi Bankey added eight points for Central (0-3).
