BAIN — McGlen Lake put on a burst in the second quarter Tuesday to take a 34-22 halftime lead over McBain Northern Michigan Christian in a 77-61 non-conference victory.
The Lakers held a slim 11-9 advantage after one quarter, but had a 23-13 second-quarter spurt.
"Defensively, we started putting some pressure on them in the second quarter and they turned the ball over some," Lakers coach Todd Hazelton said. "They came back a bit in the third quarter. That's a tough place to play."
Curtis Bunek led Glen Lake with 26 points and Mike O'Brien added 24, while Logan LaCross chipped in 12.
Trevor Gernaat led NMC with 20 points and Matt Pluger added 17.
The Lakers (2-1) host Suttons Bay in Thursday's Northwest Conference opener.
Ludington 72 TC Central 63
Ludington had a big night at the free-throw line in a 72-63 non-conference win over visiting TC Central.
The Orioles was 22-28 from the line for the night, including 12-for-18 in the fourth quarter.
TC Central (1-2) had 27 points from Ethan Pilarski while Taylor Cook scored 16 and Nate Schlusler had 10 points.
Ludington was paced by 23 points from Jacob Schoon and 20 for Trevor Wahn.
The Trojans won the JV game 45-36 as Jackson Schraemeyer scored 20 points. TC Central's freshmen also won 36-25 as Mason Houston scored nine points.
TC Central is at Alpena on Friday.
St. Francis 79 Kalkaska 50
St. Francis took a 34-24 halftime lead and extended it for a 79-50 Lake Michigan Conference win over Kalkaska.
The Gladiators (2-0, 1-0 LMC) had 20 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks from Kody Kleinrichert while Byron Bullough had 14 points and Connor Archer added nine points.
For the Blazers (2-2), Marlon Reese had 14 points and six rebounds while Caleb Gelinas had 12 points.
St. Francis also won the JV game 68-58 as Michael Olm had 17 points and Gus Danz scored 16. The Gladiators are at Gaylord on Thursday.
Benzie Central 48 Cadillac 45
Benzie Central hit the road and picked up a 48-45 non-conference win at Cadillac.
The Huskies had 18 points from Javier Rodriguez while Corey Weaver scored 15 points.
Matthew Adams had 11 points for Cadillac.
Elk Rapids 40 Kingsley 28
Elk Rapids prepared for league play with a 46-39 non-conference victory over Kingsley.
"We defended really, really well, holding them to 39 points," Elk coach Luke Johnson said.
Eddie Shaw led Elk Rapids with 12 points and Austin McMullen added eight.
Austin Olson paced the Stags with 15 points.
The Elks led 28-19 at halftime after a 16-9 second-quarter surge. Elk Rapids (2-1) travels Friday to East Jordan to start Lake Michigan Conference against the Red Devils.
Leland 47 TC Christian 35
Leland used an 18-8 fourth-quarter run to pull away from Traverse City Christian for a 47-35 non-conference victory.
The Comets (1-1) led by just two going into the final stanza, 29-27.
A.J. Whittaker led Leland with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Jonah Wilson scored eight points.
Kris Crosby led the Sabres (1-1) with 15 points and Paul Bump had 13.
Leland opens up Northwest Conference play Thursday, hosting Benzie Central.
Gaylord St. Mary 72 Central Lake 45
Gaylord St. Mary opened Ski Valley Conference play with a 72-45 win over Central Lake.
Charles Strehl scored 29 points for the Snowbirds (3-0, 1-0 SVC), who host Onaway on Thursday.
Bellaire 54 Boyne Falls 37
Mitch Teetzel scored 22 points with nine rebounds as Bellaire beat Boyne Falls 54-37.
The Eagles (2-0) also had 11 points and four rebounds from Drew Bailey.
Marcus Matelski had 19 points for the Loggers while Brendon Matelski added 11 points.
Manton 70 Buckley 25
A pair of freshmen paced Manton to a 70-25 non-conference win over Buckley.
Tyler Swing had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Rangers (2-0) while Brock Clough had 12 points. Also for Manton, Matt Skiver had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jordan Sinkle had 11 points.
Michael Rosek had six points for Buckley, which opens its Northwest Conference slate Thursday hosting Frankfort.
Forest Area 61 Pellston 52
Four players hit double digits to lead Forest Area to a 61-52 Ski Valley Conference win over Pellston.
The Warriors (1-1) had 15 points and nine rebounds from Austin Vance while Chris Birgy scored 12 points. Chad Roberts had 13 points and eight assists while Justin Burke scored 11 points with seven rebounds.
Dale Stark led the Hornets with 18 points and six rebounds.
Charlevoix 61 Gaylord 54
Charlevoix picked up a 61-54 win over Gaylord.
The Rayders had 23 points from Charlie Hamilton while Tanner Catt scored 16 points with six assists.
Bear Lake 56 Northport 37
Bear Lake hit the road for a 56-37 win over Northport.
The Lakers (2-0) had 16 points, six steals and four assists from Nick Streeter while Josh Metiva had 13 points. Shane Peterson had nine points and four steals, Tyler Johnson had eight rebounds and Riley Merrill had seven rebounds.
Manistee Catholic 70 Pentwater 50
Zack Bialik erupted for 44 points to lead Manistee Catholic Central to a 70-50 Western Michigan D League win over Pentwater.
Bialik scored at least nine points in every quarter — including 16 in the second — and knocked down five 3-pointers. He also had 13 rebounds.
Alex Bialik contributed 16 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals, while Jesse Miller grabbed nine boards.
Eric Walstrom scored 21 to lead Pentwater.
The Sabers (1-1, 1-0 WMD) host Mason County Eastern on Thursday.
Kalkaska 52 Glen Lake 33
Kalkaska sealed a 52-33 non-conference win over Glen Lake with a 15-5 fourth-quarter run.
The Blazers led by nine going into the final stanza, but took control in the fourth.
Kelli Guy led Kalkaska with 29 points, seven steals and five rebounds, while Tabitha Kibby added 11 points and four steals.
Scotlyn Brengman put up 20 points and nine rebounds for Glen Lake, and Jordan Peplinski added seven rebounds.
Kalkaska (3-0) travels Friday to TC St. Francis for its Lake Michigan Conference opener, while the Lakers (4-2) host Buckley on Friday.
Kingsley 56 Elk Rapids 27
Autumn Goggin had a double-double as Kingsley picked up a 56-27 win over Elk Rapids.
Goggin tallied 22 points with 10 rebounds and six steals in the win. The Stags (4-1) also had 14 points and five rebounds from Kenzie Meeker while Sarah Lueck had five steals.
Bridget Granger scored eight points for the Elks while Paige Granger added seven points.
Lake City 47 Manton 39
Lake City rallied from a 10-point second-quarter deficit to defeat visiting Manton 47-39 and remain unbeaten.
The Trojans (4-0, 1-0 Highland) trailed 22-12 midway through the second quarter before going on a 22-5 run to assume a 34-27 lead by the final minute of the third quarter.
Senior center Buffy Buttis scored 10 of her game-high 18 points during the run. The 6-foot-4 Buttis also grabbed 10 boards and blocked eight shots in the contest to go with three steals. Junior guard Maggie Eising tallied eight with 10 rebounds while Laraiah Schichtel scored eight and Makayla Schichtel seven.
Karrah Baker hit for 16 to lead the Rangers (0-4, 0-1) and Jurrica Stanley put eight on the board.
