TRAVERSE CITY — Lake Orion scored an overtime power-play goal to win the Traverse City West Thanksgiving Tournament 4-3 over Traverse City Central.
Cooper Marshall scored Central’s first two goals — assisted by Rhys Adle and on both by Buddy Rose — and Cam Given tied the game at 3-3 with six minutes left in regulation when Parker Hebden found him on a drop pass to finish off a 3-on-1 rush. Drew Girard-Pampu also picked up an assist on Givens’ goal.
Freshman Jack Boyce made 25 saves in his first varsity start. He and fellow freshman Darrell Carlisle will man the pipes for the Trojans this season.
Central coach Chris Givens said many people were worried about having two freshmen netminders, but those have been alleviated by a pair of solid performances to start the season.
“Everybody feels a lot better about it now,” he said. “The guys showed what they can do.”
Warren De La Salle topped TC West 5-2 in the consolation game.
The Titans led 1-0 as Ryan Rohler won the opening face-off and Jake Saxton found Erik Anton for the game’s first goal just 12 ticks into the game.
The Pilots then scored five straight times — three on the power play — before West scored again on Caleb Breithaupt’s goal set up by John Linenger and Greg Brandt.
Sophomore goaltender Tyler Buchanan made 25 saves in his first varsity start.
“The intensity is there and the work ethic,” Titans coach Jeremy Rintala said. “But we have to learn to pick our spots for physicality. If we stay out of the box, it’s a different game.”
The Trojans (1-1) host Petoskey on Wednesday, while West (0-2) travels to Gaylord to open up Big North Conference play Wednesday. Both teams head to the Upper Peninsula next weekend for games with Houghton and Hancock.
BAY REPS 4, MONROE ST. MARY CC 1: The Bay Reps scored four unanswered goals to defeat Monroe St. Mary 4-1 in the consolation game of the Big Rapids Thanksgiving Tournament.
Travis Kirk scored two goals and Chase Joppich and Josh Hill each had one. Assists came from R.J. Denewith, Gavin Uitvlugt, Hill, Trevor Apsey, Carson Altonen, Zack Bargy and Garrett Diola.
Jay Jones made 13 saves to earn the win for the Reps (1-1), who are off until traveling to Alpena on Dec. 11.
