Prep Sports Roundup: Kingsley beats Suttons Bay

Kingsley ran the ball 64 times for 361 yards as the Stags bulldozed their way to a 34-21 football victory over Suttons Bay that earned them the Little Brown Jug.

Nate Zenner was at the top of Kingsley’s ground attack, with 31 rushes for 173 yards and two touchdowns on runs of 15 and 2 yards. Zenner also had a big game defensively with nine tackles, two forced fumbles and one interception.

The Stags forced six Suttons Bay turnovers, including four interceptions. Hunter Long-Scott had two picks and Derrek Arlt added one. Nick Ames and Kelly Lark recovered the Norsemen fumbles.

The Kingsley defense held Suttons Bay to 92 yards rushing, but the Norsemen threw for 235 yards and scored two touchdowns through the air.

Suttons Bay quarterback Devin Capron, who also rushed for 80 yards, had touchdown passes of 87 yards to Carter Hanson and 72 yards to Lars Thornton. Larry Perez scored the other touchdown for the Norsemen on a 1-yard run. Thornton booted three extra points. Hanson had two catches for 115 yards and Thornton had three catches for 109 yards.

Kingsley held a 21-7 lead at the half as Nick Endres scored on a 1-yard run and Tyler Newell threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jarid Lueck. After Suttons Bay pulled to within 21-14 in the third, Danny Gelles scored on an 8-yard run and Zenner scored his second TD of the night. Caleb Wetherholt had two PAT kicks.

Defensively for Suttons Bay, Shocko Shawandase had 20 tackles, Zach Smith had 15 stops and one fumble recovery. Gabe Rittenhouse had 15 tackles and two sacks, Perez made 11 tackles and had two sacks.


Grayling 30

Charlevoix 26

Grayling overcame a 26-10 deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Charlevoix, 30-26.

The Vikings (3-0, 1-0 Lake Michigan) emerged with the victory after scoring on three straight drives. The go-ahead score came with 4:23 on a 30-yard pass from Jake Swander to Brandon Matuzak. Swander finished the night going 26 of 43 for 281 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His other touchdown toss went to Tyler McClanahan, who caught 10 passes for 110 yards. Scout Tobin added eight catches for 84 yards and Matuzak had two receptions for 35 yards.
