Prep Sports Roundup: West, Cadillac play to scoreless draw

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West and Cadillac entered Thursday’s soccer clash unbeaten in the Big North Conference.

The Titans and Vikings exited still unbeaten.

The two teams played to a 0-0 standoff.

“Both teams had opportunities,” West coach Lauran Pinto said.

Central had a goal 30 seconds into the contest called off by an offsides call. Cadillac had a penalty kick that was denied by Titans goalie Savannah Wojtankowski.

“That was a huge save,” Pinto said.

West is now 3-0-2 in the league and 5-1-3 overall.

Gaylord 3

TC Central 1

Gaylord topped Traverse City Central 3-1 in Big North Conference action.

Paige Pfannenstiel scored Central’s goal, set up by Jalyna Cisneros. Katie Wheeler made nine saves in net for the Trojans (4-6-1).

Central led 1-0 at halftime, but the Blue Devils scored three times in the final 20 minutes.

In the JV game, Gaylord won 2-0. Carrie Wynkoop made five saves for Central.

Elk Rapids 3

TC Liberty 2

Sisters Hailey and Carley Patterson scored all the goals Elk Rapids would need in a 3-2 victory over the Traverse City Liberty.

Hailey had two goals (and an assist) and Carley one goal.

Paige Granger made two saves for the Elks (8-0-1, 7-0 Lake Michigan).

Suzanne Britten scored both Liberty goals, and Logen Poniatoski stopped seven shots.

Suttons Bay 3

Houghton Lake 2

Sethe Zachman scored a goal with nine minutes remaining on a feed from Mariah Belloumini to give Suttons Bay a 3-2 win over Houghton Lake.

Emily Beyer and Dani Merwin also scored for the Norsemen (2-4-3), with assists going to Hannah Weber and Rachael Pasche. Samara Slocomb and Mikayla Knopka both saw time in net for the Norsemen, who host the Suttons Bay Invitational on Saturday.

Houghton Lake’s goals were by Jill Caroll and Maddy Walter.

TC West JV 2

Cadillac JV 2

Nora Malmberg and Mary Kate Rose each had a goal as the Traverse City West junior varsity girls soccer team played Cadillac to a 2-2 draw.

Stephanie DeVries and Macy Schwert had assists for the Titans, who led 2-0 at the half.

Brittany Sanderson and Kaylie Camp shared keeper duties.


TC St. Francis 5 15

Harbor Springs 4 1

Abbey Coger hit a bases-loaded, walk-off single to give Traverse City St. Francis a 5-4 win over Harbor Springs in the first game of a doubleheader sweep.

The game was tied 1-1 after seven innings, and the Rams scored three times in the top of the eighth, only to see the Gladiators counter with four in the bottom of the inning. Coger’s hit drove in two runs.

Bridget Bussell had two hits, a double and an RBI, Megan Knudsen had two hits and an RBI and Gabby Morgan struck out six in eight innings.

Bailey Johnson fanned seven in the 15-1 nightcap win and added a double, two runs and an RBI.

Coger had two more hits, scored two runs and drove in one, Haley Bussell scored three runs, Bridget Bussell doubled in two runs, Hannah Stachnik had two hits and two runs and Karissa Buell drove in two runs and scored two more.

The Glads (7-2, 5-1 Lake Michigan) host Gladstone today.

Buckley 4 5

Suttons Bay 3 3

Tilda Kinere picked up a pair of victories as Buckley swept Suttons Bay 4-3 and 5-3 in Northwest Conference action.

The Bears’ Kayla Taylor had two hits in the nightcap win, while Suttons Bay’s Veronica Anderson picked up two hits in the opener and Caylee Pattison had two in the second contest.

Mancelona 8 5

Pellston 1 1

Kallie Derrer went 4-for-4, including a home run and two doubles, to go with four RBIs as Mancelona defeated Pellston 8-1 in the opener of a Ski Valley Conference softball doubleheader. Mancelona completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

Derrer was the winning pitcher in both games, allowing five hits and striking out 12, then following that with a nine-strikeout performance with six hits allowed.

Taylor Robbins had two doubles and three RBIs in game one and Dakota Derrer was 2-for-3. In game two Dakota Derrer slugged a three-run homer, Kallie Derrer added a hit, and Haley Ackler and Shay Howe each went 2-for-4.

The Ironmen (6-0) travel to Johannesburg-Lewiston on Monday.

Bellaire 6 13

Forest Area 5 6

Forest Area dropped a pair of games in a softball doubleheader against visiting Bellaire, 6-5 and 13-6.

Kourtni Birgy worked the circle in both games, striking out 11 in the opener and two in the nightcap. She was relieved by Natasha Bayne, who had two strikeouts, in game two.

Offensively in the first game, Birgy and Nellie McDaniel both tripled. Bayne and Kelsey Heiler both doubled. In the second game Emily Gonyer had a triple and two RBIs, and Cami Campbell, Bayne, McDaniel and Sarah Burchette each singled.

LL St. Mary 2 16

Glen Lake 4 6

Lake Leelanau St. Mary and Glen Lake split a softball doubleheader, with Glen Lake taking game one 4-2 and St. Mary bouncing back for a 16-6 win.

Jessica Penny was the winning pitcher in the opener, striking out six, walking one and allowing three hits. Kary Pleva, Melanie Kulanda and Angilee Welch all had two hits for the Lakers.

For St. Mary, Megan Popp walked none, fanned four and gave up six hits. Marta Herman went 2-for-3 for the Eagles (10-5).

Mary Rexroat was the winning pitcher in game two. Madison Hill took the loss for Glen Lake.

Leading St. Mary offensively was Maeve Alflen, who was 3-for-4, and six others had multiple hits. Pleva, Hannah Schweikart and Kaitlyn Williams led Glen Lake with two hits.

Brethren 20 8

Bear Lake 3 13

Katelyn Adams and Nicole Girven pounded out four hits apiece as Bear Lake salvaged a split with a 13-8 win over Brethren in the nightcap of a West Michigan D doubleheader.

Emily Ferguson, who added three hits, picked up the win.

Bear Lake (7-5, 5-3) dropped the opener, 20-3.

TC St. Francis JV 10 12

TC Christ. varsity 2 6

TC St. Francis’ junior varsity improved to 8-1 with a convincing sweep of TC Christian.

Lauren Cvengros struck out 11 with two hits allowed in game one. Aly Bradfield had two hits and two RBIs for the Gladiators. In game two Bradfield got the win. Maddy Dine slugged a two-run homer.

Mikayla Brett suffered the loss in game one and Catilyn Johnson took the loss in game two for the Sabres (3-7).

Leading hitters for Christian were Sarah Hebert, who went 3-for-3 in the first game and 2-for-2 in game two, Kelsey Mohrman, who went 1-for-2 in game one and 2-for-2 in game two.

The Gladiators travel to Boyne City on Tuesday. Christian faces TC Central on Monday.


Charlevoix 13 6

Rudyard 3 4

Nate Moon and Shane Sutherland each had two hits and three RBIs as Charlevoix defeated Rudyard 13-3 in the first of two non-league games.

Will Telgenhoff also collected two hits and drove in one run. Monn tossed a three-hitter for the win.

The Rayders (9-1) won the nightcap 6-4 with J.J. Bottomley earning the win. Noah Certa had a single, double and two RBIs. Hunter Cox and Bottomley finished with two hits as well.

TC Christian 13 7

McBain NMC 1 9

Winning pitcher Cam Beemer helped his own cause with three hits and two RBIs as Traverse City Christian (4-5-1) defeated McBain NMC 13-1 in the first of two games. Beemer pitched a four-hitter. Dennis Alekseyenko added two hits and an RBI while Kevin Mannes scored three runs.

McBain NMC won the nightcap 9-7.

Glen Lake 15 16

LL St. Mary 3 2

Glen Lake dominated all facets of the game in taking a pair of baseball games at Lake Leelanau St. Mary, 15-3 and 16-2.

Zach Cooper pitched a complete game in game one, striking out six and giving up three hits in the win. Tristan Williams had a double among two hits and Trevor Apsey had two hits and drove in two runs.

Nate Schwarz had two hits for St. Mary (1-3-2).

In game two, Riley Scanlon was the winning pitcher, striking out five and allowing four hits. Offensively, Trevor Moore had two doubles among four hits and drove in five runs. Dale Pleva added three hits, and Apsey and Cooper chipped in with two hits apiece.

Jack Garthe and Schwarz had two hits each for St. Mary, which travels to Kingsley on Tuesday.

Suttons Bay 15 16

Buckley 0 1

Suttons Bay swept Buckley in Northwest Conference play 15-0 and 16-1.

Robbie Walters drove in three runs on two hits, and other top Norse performers were Logan Mikesell (2 for 3), Zach Rice (double) and Aaron Orban (2 for 3, triple, two RBIs). Martin Stowe earned the win with a three-inning no-hitter.

In the nightcap, Suttons Bay (8-3-1, 4-1-1 NWC) was led by Mikesell (triple), Jake Kiessel (2 for 3, double) and Orban (triple), while Walters and Rice combined for the win on the mound.

Mancelona 8 15

Pellston 3 1

Mancelona notched two Ski Valley Conference baseball wins, beating host Pellston 8-3 and 15-1.

Kyle Schepperley earned the win in game one, striking out seven and allowing five hits in six innings. Schepperley helped his own cause going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Logan Borst went 1-for-3 and had two RBIs, and Cole VanWagoner was 1-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Sophomore Chase Wilcox picked up the win in game two for the Ironmen (4-0). Cody Derrer went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, VanWagoner was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, Brandon Wilson went 1-for-3, scored two runs and had an RBI and Griffin Borst went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

TC West frosh 5

Charlevoix JV 4

Mitch Winowiecki threw a complete game, and Alex Strickland collected three RBIs in the Traverse City West freshman team’s 5-4 win over the Charlevoix junior varsity. Mark Andersen had a hit for the Titans.


TC Thunder 13

TC Crusaders 3

Chris Chang and Teddy Okerstrom each scored hat tricks and Jack Brewer notched five points in the Traverse City Thunder’s 13-3 win over the Traverse City Crusaders in a YMCA lacrosse game.

Logan Krieger and Brett Spanski each had two goals and an assist and Jake Bonifacio scored a goal for the Thunder (6-1). Brewer had two goals and three helpers.

Mitch Wynkoop stopped 10 shots.

Jay Jones scored two goals and Dan Wilson one for the Crusaders.
