Ken Bell Invite set for today
TRAVERSE CITY — Defending champion East Kentwood headlines today’s Ken Bell Invitational at the Traverse City Central track.
Altogether, 16 teams from all four divisions will take part. Field events begin at noon and running events at 1:30.
“We have seven state leaders in their events and several who are near the top,” Central boys coach John Lober said.
Some of the top girls entered include East Kentwood freshman Sekayi Bracey, the state leader in the 100 meters (12.07), 200 meters (24.4) and long jump (18’1”); East Kentwood thrower Mariah Davis (45’ in shot put); Manistee’s Annie Fuller (2:12.1 in the 800); St. Francis’ Holly Bullough (2:18 in the 800, 5:04 in the 1600); and Traverse City Central’s Katie Moses (2:18 in the 800, a member of Trojans 3200 meter relay 9:32.)
Among the boys entered are Petoskey freshman Tommy Roush (57’1” in the shot put), Petoskey state champion high jumper Louie Lamberti (6’ 7 1/2”), Traverse City Central high jumper Aaron Taylor (6’6”) and East Kentwood’s Houston Glass (22’5” in the long jump), and Devin McKinny (14.5 in the high hurdles).
14 earn TCJGA scholarships
TRAVERSE CITY — Fourteen members of the Traverse City Junior Golf Association will be awarded scholarships through the TCJGA toward their college education in the fall.
The recipients will be honored at the TCJGA Scholarship Tournament and Dinner on July 29 at the Traverse City Golf and Country Club.
Scholarship winners, along with high school and college attending for graduating seniors, are: Zack Bialik, Manistee Catholic (Grand Rapids Community College); Riley Boyd, TC Central (Kalamazoo College); Todd Goebel, Northville (University of New England or Johnson and Wales); Brady Greenman, TC West (Michigan State or Grand Valley); Winton Munch, TC Central (undecided); Cameron Murray, TC West (College of the Holy Cross); Payden Myers, TC West (Michigan State University or Hope College); Mike O’Brien, Glen Lake (University of Michigan); Ryan Sievers, TC West (NMC); and Trey Pezzetti, TC Central (Michigan State).
The scholarship winners from current college students are: Nikolaj Brons-Piche, Texas Wesleyan; Kevin Gaston, Ferris State; Aaron Greenman, Grand Valley State; and Shelby Newhouse, NMC.
Lions youth camp schedule released
ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions Summer Youth Football Camp is scheduled for Traverse City West Middle School June 24-27, and for Grayling High School July 13-14.
Cost for the Traverse City camp is $169, and $95 for the Grayling camp. The camp runs from 8:30 a.m.-noon daily.
The camps are open to boys and girls ages 4-18, are non-contact and designed to improve beginning, intermediate and advanced skill levels.
Camps are limited to the first 70 registrants and is conducted by professional educators from the collegiate and high school ranks.
