Prep Sports Roundup: Trojans finish strong


GRANDVILLE — Traverse City Central won the Silver Division of the Grandville Invitational volleyball tournament on Saturday, thanks to a strong finish that included two wins and a split in its last three matches.

The Trojans beat Wyoming (25-11, 25-15), split with Remus Chippewa Hills (25-27, 25-22) and downed Portland (25-18, 25-10, 15-8).

Central started the tournament by falling to Wayland (8-25, 16-25, 18-25) and Holland (18-25, 25-17, 23-25).

Leaders for the Trojans were: Sierra Fraser with 15 blocks; Callie Bartkowiak with 18 kills; Carissa Bartkowiak with 10 blocks; Hannah Nordeen with 11 kills; and Cara Ferguson with 10 digs.

The Trojans host Petoskey today.

TC West goes2-3 at Fruitport

Traverse City West posted wins over Muskegon Mona Shores and Whitehall to highlight its trip to the 10-team Fruitport Invitational on Saturday.

West beat Mona Shores 25-20, 25-12 and Whitehall 25-16, 21-25, 15-9, and dropped matches against Fremont (21-25, 25-18, 12-15), Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern (22-25, 16-25) and Dearborn Divine Child (23-25, 15-25).

The Titans were led by Katie Placek (57 kills, 26 digs, 8.5 blocks), Anna O’Hara (37 kills), Allie Peters (25 digs, 96 assists), Hannah Foote (51 digs), Olivia Bishop (12 kills, seven blocks), Maggie Gray (14 digs) and Leah Skeels (12 digs).

The Titans host Cadillac today.


TC West 6th, TCCentral 7th at Greenville

Traverse City West finished sixth out of 17 teams and Traverse City Central was seventh at Saturday’s Greenville Invitational.

Central, which finished with a 390, was led by Amelia Pezzetti, who had the second low score of the tournament with a 77. Zoe Sobeck carded a 97, Kate Trubac had 100, Molly Smith 116 and Ashley Hulet 119.

TC West shot a 381 and was led by Taylor Kehoe’s 82, which was third individually.

Hunter Kehoe (94), Summer Slack (102), Grace Ellul (103), Erica Whiting (107) and Emily Northway (112) rounded out the Titans scores.

The TC Central junior varsity team finished first in the JV portion of the meet, shooting a 472. Carley Laird led the Trojans with a 111.

Other scores included Meredith Nelson with a 116, Sam Mahon with 121 and Laura Buchanan with 124.
