TRAVERSE CITY — Kimmy Bilinski’s 12-foot jumper with 30 seconds to go forced overtime, and in the extra period Traverse City West held Sault Ste. Marie to two points as the Titans opened girls Class A basketball district play with a 33-29 overtime win.
Bilinski led the Titans with 10 points. Kiley Kreple, who had the assist on Bilinski’s game-tying shot in the fourth quarter, added nine points. Paris Wagner pulled down 14 boards.
West (9-11), which has won eight of its last 10 games, iced the game with a pair of free throws each by Kreple and Mikaela Ray.
“We’ve become a pretty solid defensive team,” said West coach Dave Ginsberg. “The girls played with a lot of heart.”
Anne Diepenhorst led Sault Ste. Marie with 17 points.
West will host Marquette on Wednesday. Marquette beat Gaylond 58-49 on Monday.
TC Central 45
Traverse City Central played one of its best games of the year to start postseason action, beating host Petoskey 45-29 in a Class A first-round district contest.
The Trojans led 22-10 and never looked back to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals at home against Alpena.
“We played lights out,” said Central coach Heather Simpson, who returned to the bench after an illness last week. “We haven’t played that way all year. Tonight it was like we were a different team. We’ve talked all year about it’s how you finish. We needed a game like this.”
Callie Bartkowiak led the Trojans (5-16) with 11 points. Hannah Cook had six for Petoskey (1-20).
Benzie Central 41
Manistee’s undefeated season flashed before its eyes when it held a slim 24-22 lead over Benzie Central in the first round of the Class B girls basketball district in Kingsley.
But the Chippewas outscored the Huskies 22-5 in the third period, including a 17-0 run, and they ended up posting a 55-41 win.
