Leland's Sneed wins D-4 crown

Joel Sneed started Saturday four shots behind the golf state finals leader.

By the end of the day, he was the leader.

The Leland standout caught Jackson Christian’s Noah Schneider by the turn and holed out a chip shot to birdie No. 11 to take the lead at Battle Creek’s Bedford Valley. He wouldn’t look back, and finished the day as the Division individual state champion with a two-day total of 147, four strokes ahead of Pentwater’s Sam Wagner.

Sneed was fourth in Division 4 two years ago, when he led Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s to the team title.

“Joel played consistently all day, highlighted by holing a sand shot on No. 11,” said Suttons Bay coach Todd Hursey. “I’d say this was one of the keys to his comeback. Joel’s experience in big tournament showed with how he finished.”

Suttons Bay’s Devin Capron took fourth overall with a two-round total of 154, shooting 77 on both days. He closed out Saturday’s round with a -1 total on the final three holes.

Mesick’s Alex Stanton had one of Division 4’s top second-day scores, improving by eight strokes to jump into the top 10. He shot a 76 after a first-round 84.

Charlevoix finished second as a team after leading the first day. The Rayders shot 342 for a two-day 663, eight shots back of White Pigeon.

Charlevoix was paced by Bradley Rizzo (81-82—163), Montana Thompson (84-81—165), Matthew Good (75-92—167) and Noah Jeakle (81-87—168).

Traverse City St. Francis took sixth, led by a 162 from Joe Coates (81-81). The Glads’ other top scores were Parker Gus (83-80—163), Riley Lamie (83-80—173), Ryan Navin (88-85—173) and Noah Phillips (91-92—183).

In Division 3 at Grand Valley State University’s The Meadows, Kalkaska took third as a team, shooting within one stroke of its opening-round score.

The Blazers’ 323 Saturday gave them a total of 645, a dozen strokes behind state champion Lansing Catholic.
