TRAVERSE CITY — A five-game losing skid came to an end Friday night as the Traverse City Beach Bums doubled up the Frontier Greys 10-5.
Rob Benedict had a 3 for 4 night — including his first professional home run — to drive in three runs, score three more and end the game a triple short of hitting for the cycle.
Shaun Cooper and Scott Woodward drove in two runs each.
The Greys (3-17) hit three home runs, but each was of the solo variety. Catcher Matt Chavez hit two and first baseman Joe Rapp added another.
Tanner Tripp gave up four runs on 11 hits over six innings for Traverse City (8-11). He walked one and struck out one to earn his first win of the season.
Frontier’s Keith Picht (0-2) walked six and gave up five hits and seven runs in 5.2 frames.
Will Rankin tossed two innings, giving up one run on a hit and a walk. Beach Bums newcomer Chuck Ghysels came on for a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his first Traverse City appearance.
In 70 minor-league appearances over two years in the Toronto Blue Jays — including 14 games for the Lansing Lugnuts last year — Ghysels sports a 3.27 ERA and 21 saves. To make room for him on the roster, TC released reliever Vladimir Camacho. The team also added left-handed pitcher Alex Phillips, who was 5-4 with a 3.52 ERA in the last two seasons in the Detroit Tigers system.
Rusty Shellhorn (0-0, 4.60) gets the start for Traverse City tonight.
