Charlevoix sits atop the Division 4 state golf finals after the first day, and Leland’s Joel Sneed is four shots off the individual lead.
The Rayders have a six-shot lead over second-place Auburn Hills Oakland Christian after the first round of the D-4 finals at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek. Charlevoix shot 321, while Traverse City St. Francis is eighth with a team total of 343.
Sneed shot a 74, and trailed Jackson Christian’s Noah Schneider by four shots. Suttons Bay’s Devin Capron is in eighth, and Sneed, Schneider and Capron will be in the same group for today’s final round.
“Devin had a good, start and a solid round,” Norsemen coach Todd Hursey said. “He made a lot of pars and handled himself well. (Today) is about moving up the leader board.”
Capron birdied two of the first three holes and ended the round with seven straight pars.
Sneed hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation and carded 16 pars in his round.
TC St. Francis’ Joe Coates is tied for 10 after shooting a first-round 81. Charlevoix has three golfers in the top 10, led by Matthew Good’s 75 in fourth place and Noah Jeakle and Bradley Rizzo each firing 81s to join Coates in 10th.
Montana Thompson added an 84 for the Rayders.
After Coates, the Gladiators were led by an 83 from Parker Gus, Ryan Navin’s 88 and 91s by Riley Lamie and Noah Phillips.
As an individual qualifier, Mesick’s Alex Stanton shot an 84.
In the Division 3 finals at Grand Valley State University’s The Meadows, Kalkaska sits in third place, nine strokes behind Lansing Catholic. Ludington is in between at 321, one shot up on the Blazers. Manistee is 13th with a 356.
Jirasin Issarawanich lead Kalkaska with a 76, which is tied for seventh overall. Bryce Hunter shot 81, Mitchael Dunn 82 and Michael Dunn 83.
Manistee was led by Blake Davis’ 82, a 90 by Will Shriver and 92s from Eric McElrath and Connor Mrozik.
Grayling’s Jake Hinkle shot 85 as an individual qualifier.
Gaylord is 14th in the Division 2 finals at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West.
The Blue Devils were led by Cam Laug (83), Josh Costello (84), Mike Misiak (84) and Jimmy Robb (87).
Playing individually, Petoskey’s Adam McCain carded a 78 and Cadillac’s Jordan Weaver shot an 86.
