Sports in Brief: 06/04/2014

LANSING — The Traverse City Bulldogs went undefeated in four games, including a 2-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Cougars in the championship game to win the Great Lakes Region Homeschool Soccer Championship.

Molly Plamondon’s goal in the last 10 minutes was the difference in the championship game. Goalie Sarah Plamondon, and defenders Savannah Raudman, Santana Gave, Kyra Eichstadt, Kennedy Eichstadt and Haley White helped keep Kalamazoo from tying the contest in the waning moments.

The Bulldogs started the tournament with 1-0 win over CYC Crossroad from Illinois, then tied the Faith Falcons of Lapeer 1-1 to earn the No. 1 seed in the Silver Division. In the semifinals, the Bulldogs defeated the Chase Conquerors of Flint 1-0.

Senior Megan Crain was awarded the Christian Character Award, while juniors Molly Plamondon and Kimberly Gordon, who netted the tying goal against Lapeer, were placed on the all-regional team.

Other members of the squad, which includes homeschoolers from Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties, are Kellie Trudeau, Kiersten Trudeau, Bryanne Gordon, McKenzie Meiner, Isabella Gave, Sara Swinerton and Lauren Prepejchal. The team is coached by Cindy Crain, Austin Crain and Rachel Depper.


BIKING THE BEAR TOUR: Beginning Wednesday, June 11, 300 cyclists participating in the 2014 NorthWest Biking The Bear Tour will begin the annual five-day tour of the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Each day, cyclists will ride a looped route that starts from their base camp at Indigo Bluffs RV Park. They will visit the following areas to enjoy the scenery, restaurants, and tourist attractions of Northwest Michigan: Wednesday, June 11, and Sunday, June 15, Empire and Glen Lake; Thursday, June 12: Traverse City and Old Mission Peninsula; Friday, June 13, The Leelanau Peninsula; and Saturday, June 14, Frankfort and Crystal Lake.

The Tri-County Bicycle Association of Lansing, a volunteer organization whose mission is to promote the use of bicycles for healthful recreation and transportation, sponsors the NW Tour.
