TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central only scored four runs, but it was enough to sweep Traverse City West in a Big North twinbill, 2-1 and 2-0.
Brenna Argue pitched a six-hitter in the opener, striking out seven. Central took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Eliza McCall triple and a Jessica Budz double. The Trojans went up 2-0 before West scored on a Angelika Diehl RBI double that brought in McKenzie Ankerson in the fourth inning.
The Titans had the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, but Central left-fielder Autumn Decker made a diving catch and then doubled up the runner at second to end the game.
"That was the play of the game," Central (12-6, 2-4) coach Nate Alger said.
Kelly O'Hara and Emily Grierson also had hits for the Titans (1-12-1, 1-5-1 Big North).
Ryan Schiller tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap. She was helped by a strong defense. Shortstop Emily Jenkins had three diving catches in the game. Budz doubled and scored a run for the Trojans. Allie Little contributed an RBI single.
Grierson threw a two-hitter in the second game for West. She fanned two.
West's hits came from Grierson, Diehl and Lindsey Kelso.
"We hit the ball hard in the first game," said West head coach Kathy Breece. "TC Central really made some nice catches. We had to play perfect to beat them and we didn't. In game two they played well. They just shut down our offense. Kudos to their pitching staff and their defense as well."
West is at Cadillac today to finish a doubleheader that was postponed last week. Central competes in the Glen Lakes tournament on Saturday.
