ACME — Team only count four golfers.
Except for Saturday.
Muskegon Mona Shores and Swartz Creek tied after two days of golf in the Traverse City Central Tee-Off Invitational, each shooting a two-day total of 622 in the 28-team tournament.
That's where the fifth golfer comes in.
In order to break the tie, both teams factored in their fifth score for each day and the Sailors won by five unofficial strokes, although each total officially remains 622.
Traverse City West's Alex Scott was the low medalist of the tournament, shooting a +3 round of 73 on the Grand Traverse Resort's Spruce Run course. That, combined with his 3-under 69 in Friday's opening day, gave him the individual win by two strokes over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central's Max Rispler.
"Just consistent play," West coach Mike Schultz said. "He was on top of his game. He only had a couple bogeys all tournament."
As a team, the Titans had a two-day total of 676 to finish 10th out of 13 in the field's Division 1 portion. TC Central's 685 was 12th.
Aside from Scott's 73, Matt Orwig and Jacob Martin shot 88 each and Sawyer Robinson had a 95.
Grosse Pointe South was third in the Division 1 field at 625.
TC Central was led by Danny Brott (76-88—164), Abe Lewis (84-82—166), Derek Shrank (82-89—171) and Jordan Bultsma (100-96—196).
"Every coach I talked to was amazed at how good the courses were," Central coach Dave McMellen said. "There's isn't a dead blade of grass on the fairways."
Grand Rapids Christian won the tournament's Division 2-4 portion with a 641, 22 strokes ahead of runner-up East Grand Rapids. Petoskey was third at 678, led by Silas Lee's 83-79—162 total.
Suttons Bay moved up from a 12th-place tie to eighth with a second-day 346 that shaved 36 strokes off the previous day's effort. Devin Capron led the way with a 74, followed by Lars Thornton (83), Chris Jasinski (92) and Mason Rohrback (97).
Leland's Joel Sneed shot 75 for the second straight day to tie for sixth place overall and finish as one of the tourney's 10 medalists.
Other area team leaders were Gaylord's Cam Laug (81-79—160), Cadillac's Jordan Weaver (83-85—168) and Manistee's Blake Davis (83-86—169).
Central and West head Tuesday to Petoskey's Bayview Country Club for a Big North Conference jamboree, with the Titans hosting their own tournament Saturday at Mistwood.
