College Notes: Otwell wins 1,500 meters at Jesse Owens Classic

TENNIS

Aquinas: Fisher Sutherland (TC Central) won 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles in the Saints’ 9-0 win over Cornerstone. He’s 16-6 this season.

Hope: Cam Ludlow (Petoskey) won 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 over Adrian’s Troy Gargrove at No. 6 singles in Hope’s 6-3 dual win Saturday.

TRACK & FIELD

Alma: The MIAA named Payton Lupu (Onaway) the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. Lupu took first in two events as she helped Alma place third at the MIAA Track and Field Jamboree at Alma. Lupu won the shot put (12.5 meters) and the hammer throw (40.88).

Grand Valley State: Nathan Dekam (McBain) took first in the discus at the Al Owens Classic with a throw of 165-3.

Lake Superior State: Spencer Montcastle (TC West) finished in 15th place in the 400 meters (51.67) as LSSU finished fourth at the Grand Valley State Al Owens Classic.

Michigan Tech: Patrick Spaldin (Bear Lake) placed 11th in the high jump in the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State, which featured 900 athletes. ... Brian Fisk (Manistee) was part of the Huskies’ seventh-place 400 relay team. ... Hannah Schnack (TC West) was a member of the 400 relay team that placed sixth.

Northern Michigan: Jaylee Brown (Onekama) was 14th out of 65 runners in the 800-meter run at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State.

Northwood: Jacob Hurrell (Cadillac) joined teammates Rayvaun Tyler, Korvan Harris and Josh Gardner on the winning 4X100 relay team at the Al Owens Classic. The foursome ran a time of 41.93.

Saginaw Valley: Andrew Plude (Charlevoix) ran the anchor leg of Saginaw Valley’s eighth-place 1,600-meter relay team at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State.
