COLUMBUS, Ohio — Michigan State redshirt senior Julia Otwell (Traverse City Central) won the 1,500-meter run Friday in the Jesse Owens Track Classic at Ohio State.
Otwell, who now owns the fastest time on the team this season, crossed the finish line in a career-best 4:22.46.
Michigan State swept the top three spots in the race as Lindsay Clark came in second (4:25.70) and Sara Stassen third (4:25.87). Clark and Stassen set personal bests, too.
“The women’s 1,500-meter was outstanding,” Spartan coach Walt Drenth said. “To go one, two, three and have a whole number of personal and season bests; they were great. Julia (Otwell) and Lindsay (Clark) seem to continue to have good practices and they equate to good competition.”
Otwell was one of five members of the track and field team to be recognized at the Spartan Academic Excellence Gala last Monday. She was honored as a Scholar-Athlete Award recipient for having the highest cumulative GPA on the team.
Connor Kostrzewa (Traverse City West) was 14th in the men’s hammer throw (190-07).
“Connor had a really good throwing day,” Drenth said. “That’s a sign that he’ll perform well at the conference meet.”
Albion: Craig Conway, an Albion College sophomore from Mancelona, pitched a complete game as the Britons earned a 3-2 victory over Hope College in the first game of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader. Conway, now 3-2 on the mound this season, allowed one earned run on seven hits and a walk. He struck out seven. Gunnar Owens (Johannesburg-Lewiston) worked one inning of relief, striking out one, in an 11-1 win over Spring Arbor.
Alma: Kevin Thompson (Petoskey) was the starting pitcher in Alma’s 4-3 loss to Calvin College. Thompson worked 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs.
Davenport: Ryan Manning (Suttons Bay) went 4-for-7 with four RBIs as Davenport faced Cornerstone in a doubleheader. Manning is hitting .323 with 15 RBIs for the Panthers.
