Prep Sports Roundup: TC Thunder romps at Thirlby Field

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Thunder opened the lacrosse season Saturday with an 11-1 win over Muskegon Reeths-Puffer and a 12-3 decision over Sault Ste, Marie.

The games were played at Thirlby Field.

Chris Bennett led the fireworks with six goals and two assists on the day. Yani Beeker added five goals and one assist and Jack Brewer four goals and five assists. Also filling up the stat sheet: Ted Okerstrom (three goals, one assist), Ellis Begley (three goals) and Chris Chang and Brett Spanski (one goal, two assists).

Mitch Wynkoop had 17 saves in the two games.

The Thunder play the Traverse City Crusaders on Friday at Traverse City Christian.


TC Central claims Frankfort Invitational

Traverse City Central hit three solo home runs in the first inning en route to a 6-2 win over Frankfort in the championship game of the Frankfort Invitational.

Mikhaila Shepler, Mariah Bensley and Jessica Budz all hit solo shots to power Central to an early lead. Budz finished 3-for-3 in the game with two RBIs. She also had a double as did Shepler. Ali Little contributed an RBI double as well.

Ryan Schiller earned the win, allowing two hits.

Madison Dine paced Frankfort with two hits.

Central (6-2) opened with a 16-1 win over Mason County Eastern. Brenna Argue picked up the win and helped her own cause with two hits and three RBIs. Budz had a double and two RBIs.

Frankfort beat Elk Rapids 7-2 in its opener. Mackenna Kelly pitched a four-hitter, striking out 10. Courtney Bower homered for the Panthers (4-2). Andrea Willsey and Dine had three hits and Kelly two.

Elk Rapids beat Mason County Eastern in the consolation game.

Central hosts Petoskey on Tuesday. Frankfort is at Lake Leelanau St. Mary on Tuesday.


Mancelona captures Frankfort Invitational

Cole VanWagoner and Nick Balhorn powered Mancelona to a 13-9 win over Frankfort in the championship game of the Frankfort Invitational.
