Boys Basketball District Roundup: Frankfort repeats

MESICK — Frankfort repeated as district champions on Friday with a 60-50 win over Onekama in the Class D final at Mesick.

The Panthers (18-5) will take on Baldwin Monday at TC Central.

Onekama led 14-13 after the first quarter, but Frankfort held the Portagers scoreless for a 6-minute stretch and led 27-19 at the half.

Owen Stratton had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Frankfort while David Loney had 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Derek Hobart had 18 points for Onekama while Bryce Reckow had 14 points.

Grayling 64

Ogemaw Heights 53

Grayling won its third straight Class B district championship with a 64-53 victory over Ogemaw Heights.

The Vikings led 47-29 after three quarters.

“Defensively, we were really active,” Grayling coach Rich Moffit said. “We forced 27 turnovers and got our transition game going.”

The Vikings (18-5) host regionals and play Gladstone at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Justice Juntilla paced Grayling with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyler McClanahan had 11 points and five assists. Scott Parkinson and Tyler Powers added nine points each.

Damon Zettel led Ogemaw with 13 points.

Baldwin 38

Manistee CC 35

Host Baldwin hung on for a 38-35 win over Manistee Catholic in the Class D district finale.

The Panthers had 23 points from Brandon Childress and led 36-29 late before the Sabers closed within three.

The Sabers (18-4) struggled shooting all night, finishing 9-for-36 from the floor. Zack Bialik had 16 points, Andrew Perry had five points and nine rebounds, Jesse Miller had seven rebounds while Ben Feliczak had six boards and eight points.

“It wasn’t that our defense was failing us, we just couldn’t put the ball in the hoop,” Manistee CC coach Dale Edmonson Jr. said.

Pellston 53

Burt Lake NMCA 40

Aaron Chatfield eclipsed the 1,500 point mark, but Burt Lake NMCA fell just short in a 53-40 Class D district final.

The score was tied 36-36 in the fourth quarter, but the host Hornets finished with a 17-4 run.

Jake Lovitt led the Eagles (10-11) with 18 points, Chatfield had 12 points, 14 rebounds and six assists and Robert Taylor pitched in 10 points and seven rebounds.
