Top sprinters highlight Honor Roll meet lineup

TRAVERSE CITY — The best of the best will take to the track tonight in the 39th annual Record-Eagle Honor Roll meet at Traverse City Central.

Some interesting races loom, particularly in the sprints.

On the boys’ side, Traverse City Central’s T.J. Schwannecke and Traverse City West’s Dan Montgomery and Tyler Johnson headline the 100 and 200. Schwannecke and Johnson won the 100 and 200, respectively, in the Big North. Montgomery, though, captured the 100 in the regional.

On the girls’ side, Central’s Courtney Cadotte and St. Francis’ Lauren Buckel enter as top seeds in the 100 and 200. But just barely. Cadotte, the Big North and regional champion in the 100, has posted a best of 12.4. St. Francis’ Grace Meachum is at 12.6. In the 200, Buckel, the Lake Michigan Conference and regional champion, has a best of 26.24. Traverse City West’s Allida Smith is at 26.34.

The girls’ 800 and 1600 should be intriguing, too, with two of the premier distance runners in the north — St. Francis freshman Holly Bullough and Traverse City Central’s Katie Moses. Bullough is the No.1 seed in the two events.

“Holly is exciting to watch,” Central coach Lisa Taylor said. “She’s such a great competitor and a great sport.”

Taylor expects Moses to respond.

“Katie has a great attitude about having a person like Holly being able to pull her to a great race,” Taylor said.

Kingsley’s Molly Franke is also a top seed in two events — shot put and discus.

Two girls’ relays that should be extremely competitive are the 800 and 1600. Central and St. Francis are co-No. 1 seeds in the 800 (1:47.5). Benzie Central is right there, too (1:47.7). Benzie is the top seed in the 1600 (4:09.6) with West (4:09.7) and St. Francis (4:10.8) close behind.

The boys’ 110 high hurdles could be a shootout with Central’s Alex Liggett and Aaron Taylor and West’s Spencer Montcastle.
