TC Central relay finishes sixth at national meet

GREENSBORO, N.C. — An 1,800-mile round trip was made completely worth it.

Traverse City Central runners Anthony Berry, Kyle Dotterrer, Keefer Edwards and Cam McAuliffe earned all-American status on Sunday after they finished sixth in the 4-mile relay at the New Balance Nationals outdoor meet at North Carolina A&T.

The top six in each event are named all-American, which the Central quartet did in a school record-setting time of 17:45.01.

“It feels really great to end it on a high note,” said Dotterrer, the lone senior in the group. “It was completely different than any other meet I’ve ever been to before, but different in a good way. Lots of energy, lots of fast kids all in one place, which is a little bit intimidating.”

Central’s old school record was 18:04, but that record came in a 4x1,600-meter event. Using a conversion rate to make the two distances equal, Central’s time translated to a 17:39.01, a difference of 25 seconds over the old record.

“It was a great race,” said TC Central head coach John Lober. “We knew we were pretty strong in this event. These kids have been running for a year. They ran all winter. They’ve put their time in. They committed to running well and they did.”

Berry got the relay off to a good start when he ran his leg in 4:21.5, which was the best split on the team. Berry, a sophomore, had Central in the lead when he handed the baton off to Dotterrer, who ran a leg of 4:24.1. The Trojans were in third place when Edwards took his turn, and after he ran a 4:36.3 they were still among the top five. That set the stage for McAuliffe, who ran a 4:22.7 and held off a late charge to allow the Trojans to stay within the top six.
