Central runners set records at national meet

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Traverse City Central runners set school records in two events while competing at the New Balance Nationals on Saturday.

The team of Alex Liggett, Alex Hu, Josh Belcher and Aaron Taylor set the record in the 110-meter high hurdle shuttle relay after running an eighth-place time of 60.79. In the 3,200 relay, the team of Anthony Berry, Kyle Dotterrer, Chris Brower and Cam McAuliffe had a record-setting time of 7:46.71, which put them 11th. The 3,200 time was 2.5 seconds faster than the Trojans ran at the state finals two weeks ago.

Central has one more event in which to compete at the nationals, the 4-mile relay. The Trojans’ quartet is scheduled to run that event at 8:15 a.m. Fans can follow the race by visiting www.nationalscholastic.org and going to the New Balance Nationals Outdoor page.

At another meet involving a Central track standout that took place on Saturday, John Piatek placed in two events at the Midwest Meet of Champions at Denison University in Grandville, Ohio. Piatek placed fourth in the shot put (56-0.5) and was seventh in the discus (159-8). The meet consisted of athletes from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
