Glen Lake to tackle semifinals Friday

MAPLE CITY — Friday is a new start for Glen Lake.

After advancing to the Division 4 state semifinals with a 5-2 win over Norway, the Lakers want to forget last year’s 15-0 semifinal loss to Beal City.

Clean slate.

“We don’t like to talk about it, first of all,” senior shortstop Tristan Williams laughed. “This is a new season. We have to be our own selves and go win.”

Luckily, the semis and finals aren’t even in the same location as last year, shifting from Battle Creek to East Lansing.

“We’re a little more focused this year,” senior pitcher Thomas Waning said. “Last year, we went down there and saw all the bright lights and that we made it to the semifinals and kind of crumbled under the pressure. This year, we’re more focused and we want to go down there and do more.”

Last year’s semifinal was 1-0 through four innings before Beal City exploded for five runs in the fifth and nine in the sixth.

“We played good baseball last year, but we only had two seniors,” Lakers coach Kris Herman said. “But for the most part, we were a pretty young team. You could sense a different feel in our team when we went down there last year. You could sense a little bit of nerves.”

“I’m really excited to go back,” Williams said. “But we have some work to do. Like last year, we can’t just go down there and get blown out. We have to actually put up a fight and maybe bring back a trophy.”

Lakers center fielder Riley Scanlon is recovering from a rolled ankle sustained in regionals. He will play Friday if he can run on it, Herman said. Scanlon hit .321 with 15 steals this season. Only Williams (25) and Trevor Apsey (18) had more.
